Why Your Role Matters:

As a Travel Risk Assessment Officer at UNSW, you play a vital role in protecting the safety and wellbeing of our staff and Higher Degree Research (HDR) students when undertaking university-supported travel.

Your assessments ensure all journeys are aligned with UNSW's commitment to risk management, safety, and duty of care. By critically evaluating travel requests and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, you support the University maintaining its global engagement while safeguarding people, research, and institutional integrity.

This role reports to Senior Manager, Business Continuity, Risk & Resilience and supports informed decision-making at the highest levels and contributes to a culture of proactive risk management across UNSW.

Your day to day will include:

  • Reviewing pre-trip approvals and assess potential travel risks and endorse, engage or decline UNSW supported travel as per UNSW Travel Policy, WHS & Risk policies and procedures.
  • Effectively using available information, resources and advice to assess non-complex travel request.
  • Investigating travel plans and making recommendations in line with both university policy and procedures and government travel advice.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders (P&C, IT/Cyber, Safety, People Leaders or research or fieldwork experts/insurance) to clarify information and seek additional details
  • Providing analysis of travel assessments and making recommendations considering business continuity and risk for complex cases, including drafting of recommendation papers

Who You Are:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or knowledge of risk assessments or human resources/safety risks.
  • Proven knowledge of ISO 31030:2021 Travel Risk Management, understanding of security and safety principles and risks, knowledge of regulatory environment.
  • Experience using critical thinking and analysis skills.
  • Advanced communication skills, with experience working with senior stakeholders and ability to work with and respond to all levels of staff and students
  • Ability to work independently and seek advice through engagement with internal and external stakeholders
  • Proven competency in technology use, including internet research, MS Office /Office 365 and will be trained in use of specific internal systems
  • Ability to provide written advice to relevant managers to inform decision making
