Position Summary
Residential Tutor/Counselor (RTC) is responsible for the well-being of Upward Bound students. Mentoring, academic tutoring, and various types of supervision are all facets of this responsibility. For five weeks, with the exception of weekends, the RTC is expected to keep close contact with the students in all aspects of community life. The Residential Tutor Counselor (RTC) lives in the residence hall among students and takes on the roles of teacher, counselor, and mentor. The RTC enforces program rules and codes of behavior and is expected to respond to all nighttime emergencies. RTCs should report serious breaches of program rules to the proper administrator. RTCs will sleep and reside in the program’s residence hall and be available for nighttime emergencies.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification
Upper level academically successful college student (at least 45 credits earned). Knowledge of either Foreign Language, Physical Sciences, Computer Science, English or Math. Interest in working with adolescents.

Interpersonal skills, sensitivity to the needs of the disadvantaged, and commitment to the goals of Upward Bound. Intangible traits such as reliability, flexibility, effective communication, trustworthiness, motivation, leadership qualities and a positive attitude, excels in a team setting.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Assist Instructor with supplemental preparation for class. Assist instructor with daily classroom activities. (20%)
- Attend all study hall periods. Assist students in specified area during the study hall period. (20%)
- Reside and supervise students in residence halls. (20%)
- Attend all residential staff meetings. Supply daily report to counselors. Assist the program with ongoing activities outside classroom. Upkeep of tutorial log. (20%)
- Participate in program evaluation. Assist with programmatic duties as assigned by UB/UBMS staff. (20%)
