About the Department and/or College

The National Wind Institute (NWI) has evolved from its traditional singular focus on wind hazards to three main research pillars of Energy Systems, Atmospheric Measurement & Simulation, and Wind Engineering. Though all three of these pillars focus on distinct issues, they also maintain common ground via cross cutting themes. All research seeks to benefit communities at micro and macro scales.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of faculty and staff to significantly enhance the measurement and prediction of severe flooding and other high-impact weather events across Texas by designing, building, and operating a state-of-the-art weather intelligence system that protects lives, property, and the Texas economy.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing operational maintenance of a real-time, high-resolution (2 km grid spacing) ensemble weather modeling system focused specifically on Texas.
  • Develop user-driven data streams and tailored forecast products from model output to meet the operational needs of forecasters, emergency managers, and other key decision-makers.
  • Contribute to research and development efforts that continuously advance and improve the modeling system's accuracy, ensemble strategies, approach and overall forecast skill.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to identify strategic priorities and future investments that maximize long-term impact and value for the State of Texas.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, Engineering, or Computer Sciences. Demonstrated record of effectiveness as a researcher. Should have a record of activity which has contributed to the discipline or field of research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong skills in configuring and managing HPC resources, including scripting and workflow automation.

Pay Range

$86,800 - $112,900 - $138,900
