The following is an adapted hosting offer specifically tailored for the TÜBİTAK Co-Circulation3 (MSCA COFUND) scheme, which aims to attract experienced researchers to Türkiye.
Title: TÜBİTAK Co-Circulation3 (MSCA COFUND) Fellowship: Hosting Offer at Istinye University ISU XR Lab
Host Institution: Istinye University, Istanbul, Türkiye
Research Group: Modeling, Simulation, and Extended Reality (ISU XR Lab / CARE Labs)
Principal Investigator: Asst. Prof. Dr. Şenol Pişkin
About the Host Institution and Research Environment
The Modeling, Simulation, and Extended Reality research group is located at Istinye University in Istanbul. The laboratory focuses on translational health sciences integrated with immersive technologies, wearable devices, and computational models. The research ecosystem operates within a massive clinical network of over 35 hospitals, serving millions of patients annually. This unprecedented access enables seamless translational research and the direct application of engineering solutions to real-world medical challenges.
The ISU XR Lab features a highly multidisciplinary team comprising mechanical, electronics, software, and biomedical engineers, as well as game designers and medical clinicians. The team regularly collaborates with cardiovascular surgeons, cardiologists, and radiologists to develop cutting-edge healthcare technologies.
Broad Research Interests
Translational Healthcare Technologies, Biomedical Engineering, Extended/Virtual/Augmented Reality (XR/VR/AR), Digital Twins, Robotics, Haptics, Wearables, High-Performance Computing (HPC), Clinical Image Processing, Machine Learning, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis, Biomechanics, and Cardiovascular Simulation (Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Treatment Planning).
Proposed Themes for Co-Circulation3 Proposals
Prospective fellows are invited to co-develop proposals aligned with the following strategic priorities:
- Digital Twins for the 3Rs Framework: Developing advanced digital twins of human and animal models to drive the Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement (3Rs) framework in translational medical research.
- Pediatric Cardiovascular Interventions: Utilizing computational models, virtual human physiology, and high-performance computing to enhance surgical planning, hemodynamics analysis, and diagnosis for pediatric congenital heart disease.
- The "Digital Age" Metric: Formulating a novel physiological age metric using an integration of extended reality, wearable sensors, and machine learning to map health progression.
- AI and Immersive Medical Imaging: Advancing medical image segmentation and processing through immersive data environments, focusing on AI-driven diagnostics for oncology, MRI, and ultrasound.
Candidate Profile
- Must meet the TÜBİTAK Co-Circulation3 eligibility criteria (holding a PhD or having at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience).
- Must comply with the MSCA mobility rule (candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Türkiye for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the call deadline).
- Strong academic background in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, or related disciplines.
- Technical proficiency in areas such as AI/machine learning, extended reality (XR) development, high-performance computing, or computational fluid dynamics
- A strong drive for multidisciplinary teamwork and translational health sciences.
Application Process
Eligible researchers are encouraged to submit a CV, a comprehensive list of publications, and a 1-2-page project concept that aligns with the laboratory's research themes. Early expressions of interest are highly recommended to ensure sufficient time to develop a collaborative proposal on the TÜBİTAK Co-Circulation3 portal ahead of the application deadline.
