Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, business computer systems, or a related field. Experience in data modeling, interpreting insights from datasets, and presenting narratives and visualizations. Proficiency in using Qlik Cloud or Qlik Sense Enterprise, Power BI, Power Query, and Data Modeling within Power BI. Competence in analytical languages such as Python, along with a solid understanding of databases and SQL. Familiarity with data modeling concepts and methodologies. Keen attention to detail, strong data analysis skills, troubleshooting abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. Familiarity with vendor-neutral data acquisition platforms such as AVEVA PI System, Tridium Niagara, or SkySpark. Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS. Familiarity with building automation system platforms such as Automated Logic WebCTRL.
Position Summary: The Data Specialist will support the Office of Utility and Energy Management (UEM) by delivering data solutions that enhance sustainability and resiliency for the University of Georgia. This role involves collaborating with stakeholders on data projects, maintaining dashboards and data models, managing data sources, and supporting data governance. The Data Specialist will provide insights for decision-making and improve business processes related to utility and energy management. Candidates should have a strong interest in sustainable solutions and a passion for using data to drive energy and water conservation.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies: Expertise in data management and data governance. Knowledge of data analytics and visualization tools, especially Qlik Cloud and Power BI. Understanding of data analytics and data architecture concepts. Experience with low-code/no-code software solutions such as SmartSheet and Microsoft Power Apps. Experience writing SQL queries. Experience connecting to web service APIs. Excellent verbal and nonverbal communication skills. Mission-driven mindset and interest in sustainability. Curiosity for how data can tell the story of facility performance and drive improvements.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Analytics Dashboard and Data Model Development (35%): Build and maintain dashboards and visualizations using tools such as Qlik, Power BI, and others to support energy management initiatives. Conduct advanced analysis of large datasets to uncover trends and opportunities for energy efficiency. Develop analytics resources that enhance transparency, accountability, and operational performance. Execute forecasting and predictive modeling projects to support sustainability and energy optimization. Perform data preprocessing and exploratory analysis on structured and unstructured datasets. Integrate external data sources to enrich internal datasets and improve insight quality. Validate and ensure accuracy of data used in reports and queries.
- Support for Analytics Strategy and Data Literacy (30%): Assist in executing the analytics strategy in coordination with IT and energy management teams. Maintain and enhance reporting platforms, particularly in Qlik Cloud, to ensure consistent and user-friendly analytics tools. Explore and apply predictive analytics and AI techniques to improve energy management outcomes. Maintain documentation such as data dictionaries and metadata for clarity and consistency. Provide technical support and training to stakeholders on data tools and promote data literacy.
- Data Source Integration and Validation (15%): Develop and maintain ETL/ELT workflows to consolidate data from diverse sources into a comprehensive energy data catalog. Collaborate with FMD IT to monitor data pipelines to ensure platform stability and performance. Conduct end-to-end data validation to maintain accuracy and reliability of datasets.
- Stakeholder Collaboration and Data Insight Development (15%): Collaborate with stakeholders to gather data requirements and translate them into actionable insights that support energy-related decision-making. Maintain effective communication with stakeholders to ensure data solutions align with operational needs and sustainability goals. Contribute to a collaborative work environment by sharing technical knowledge and supporting team learning. Assist in implementing analytics solutions that improve workflow, performance, and data-driven decision-making. Prepare and present data findings and visualizations to stakeholders.
- Other Duties (5%): Perform other duties related to special projects within FMD as they relate to the position and needs of the department.
