Summary

The Center for Student Belonging (CSB) seeks highly motivated and collaborative Undergraduate District Scholars (DS) Student Ambassadors.

District Scholars Student Ambassadors serve as peer leaders, mentors, and advocates for students in the District Scholars Program. Ambassadors play a key role during the three-day pre-orientation experience and provide ongoing support throughout the academic year by fostering belonging, promoting academic success, and connecting students to campus resources. This role emphasizes mentorship, leadership development, and sustained engagement rather than residential supervision.

Essential Functions

1. Pre-Orientation (Summer) Responsibilities

  • Participate in required training and all pre-orientation activities.
  • Serve as a small-group peer leader during the District Scholars experience.
  • Facilitate discussions and support community-building activities.
  • Assist students in navigating their transition to AU.

2. Academic Year Responsibilities

  • Provide peer mentorship to assigned District Scholars.
  • Assist in planning and facilitating workshops, study halls, and community events.
  • Maintain consistent communication with scholars and CSB staff.
  • Connect students to campus resources that support academic success and retention.

3. Community & Administrative Support

  • Foster a respectful, inclusive community environment.
  • Assist with attendance tracking, reflections, and assessment efforts.
  • Support District Scholars and CSB events as needed.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Part-time. 10 hours per week.

Salary Range

$18.40 per hour.

Required Education & Experience

  • Must be a current undergraduate student at American University in good academic standing (Cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher).
  • Be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior Student at American University.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to serve as a positive peer role model and mentor.
  • Willingness to commit to both the pre-orientation program and academic-year responsibilities.
