About the Project

Powdered polymer Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) processes such as Selective Laser Sintering and High Speed Sintering have shown increasing potential for a wide range of applications, due in large part to their complex geometric capabilities. However, despite the attention these processes have been receiving, their development has suffered from the limited range of suitable materials which can be processed in them.

In this PhD you will investigate the use of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in these processes. As the material melts at a higher temperature than many powdered polymer Additive Manufacturing systems are designed for, you will trial a variety of different approaches to enable the production of high quality parts or components. This may include the blending of PET with other polymers or fillers, post-processing approaches to improve mechanical properties, or novel in-process manufacturing strategies. You will also investigate the levels of powder recovery and reuse achievable within the Additive Manufacturing process.
