Your personal sphere of play:

Your future position will be at the Institute for Roman Law and Ancient Legal History in the team of Univ.-Prof. DDr. José-Domingo Rodríguez Martin. The advertised position is aimed at a person who conducts independent research and teaches in the fields of Roman law and the legal history of the Greek world from antiquity to the post-Byzantine period.

The Institute for Roman Law and Ancient Legal History is part of the Faculty of Law.

Your future tasks:

You will actively participate in research, teaching and administration, which means in particular:

  • Establishing and developing an independent research profile with a focus on the legal history of the Greek world (ancient, Byzantine and post-Byzantine eras).
  • Collaborating on research projects and initiating your own research projects in this field.
  • Engaging in international academic communication: publications in relevant journals, lectures, conference contributions.
  • Acquiring competitive third-party funding.
  • Preparing and completing a postdoctoral thesis ready for publication.
  • Independent teaching, particularly in the compulsory and elective subjects of the curriculum in the field of Roman law - either in the German-language diploma programme or in the English-language programme in International Law (bachelor's programme).
  • Supervision of students and participation in examinations.
  • Collaboration on quality assurance and evaluation measures.
  • Performance of administrative tasks in research and teaching.

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed doctoral/PhD degree in law
  • Outstanding dissertation
  • Demonstrable academic excellence trough international, peer-reviewed publications on topics related to the legal history of the Greek world and/or Roman law.
  • Teching skills, including experience with digital teaching and learning formats.
  • Solid IT skills.
  • Excellent  English skills (C1).
  • Very good knowledge of Ancient Greek and/or Middle Greek and/or Modern Greek; in addition, confident command of other key academic languages (e.g. German, French, Italian) for search literature.
  • High level of teamwork and communication skills.

Desirable qualities:

  • An in-depth research profile with a clear focus on the legal history of the Greek world (ancient, Byzantine or post-Byzantine periods).
  • Knowledge and experience in the historical auxiliary sciences for legal history, in particular palaeography, codicology, diplomatics and epigraphy.
  • Experience working in archives with relevant document collections, especially private law sources (e.g. notarial deeds), court files and administrative documents.
  • Publications in renowned, subject-specific publications.
  • International lecturing activity in relevant specialist forums on the legal history of the Greek world.
  • Knowledge of university procedures and structures.
  • Experience abroad.
  • Experience in student support.
