Your personal scope:

For the Department of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michael Lysander Fremuth, a University Assistant (Postdoc, 40 hours/week) is sought starting 1 May 2026 for the research area Fundamental and Human Rights and for the coordination between university activities and those of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR).

The initial contract duration is six years.

Your specific tasks:

You will be integrated into the team of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) and work at the interface between the responsibilities of the Department of Prof Fremuth at the University and those of the LBI-GMR. In this role, you will actively and responsibly contribute to research, teaching, administration, and coordination in the field of human rights, particularly international criminal law and LGBTI law. Your tasks will include:

  • Conducting research on international human rights protection in its multiple dimensions (including LGBTI-related topics and their connections to international criminal law) as well as on Austrian law;
  • Together with the Director of the Institute, developing the research program line “Human Rights and International Criminal Law”, which is to be established at the LBI-GMR; in this context you will also assume leadership responsibilities;
  • Independently developing research projects within the thematic areas of the department;
  • Successfully applying for research funding and acquiring third-party funding;
  • Expanding your international publication and presentation activities;
  • Teaching independent courses in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement in German and English;
  • Supporting the department’s examination activities, in particular the FÜM III;
  • Supervising students within the scope of your activities;
  • Contributing to evaluation measures and quality assurance;
  • Participating in research, teaching, and institute administration; in particular assuming management and coordination responsibilities in the administration of third-party funded projects.

Your profile:

  • A doctoral degree (PhD) in law with a research focus on international criminal law and human rights, preferably obtained from a faculty of law with success above average;
  • Scientific study of international criminal law and LGBTI issues, proven expertise inter alia through publications and lectures;
  • Experience in the design and independent delivery of university-level courses;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent command of German sufficient to teach courses in German immediately;
  • Proven knowledge in Austrian public law, to be immediately ready to work in the area of examinations;
  • Very good proficiency in English, both spoken and written;
  • Strong IT skills, including competence in hosting online conferences and managing digital recordings;
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Following knowledge desirable:

  • Publications in reputable, discipline-specific academic journals;
  • Experience presenting research at international conferences;
  • Experience in securing external research funding (submission of a record of third-party funding is desirable);
  • Experience in organizing international conferences and workshops;
  • Extensive teaching experience in the fields of human rights and international criminal law;
  • Familiarity with university procedures and administrative structures;
  • Familiarity with the function of extra-university research institution;
  • Experience in supervising and advising students.
