Your personal sphere of influence: We are pleased to offer a fully funded PhD position in a newly established research group with a young and dynamic atmosphere. This position focuses on developing new research directions in the field of homogeneous catalysis. In particular, you will work on the development of novel catalysts for previously unexplored transformations, as well as on the activation of inert substances. Become part of our dynamic team and unleash your creativity in discovering diverse activation mechanisms (e.g., thermal, photochemical, and electrochemical activation).
Your research topics will include:
- the design, synthesis, and purification of organic and organometallic catalysts;
- the application of the developed catalysts in homogeneous catalysis;
- and the elucidation of reaction mechanisms using various techniques (e.g., NMR, UV-Vis, CV, IR, etc.).
The goal of our research is both to expand current knowledge of catalytic activation in main group chemistry and to contribute to the development of sustainable methodologies. We are seeking ambitious and creative individuals with a solid background in organic chemistry and synthesis. Applicants with a passion for innovative research and a strong interest in organic synthesis, catalysis, and physical organic chemistry are especially encouraged to apply.
The employment contract is for a duration of 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the contract will be automatically extended to 4 years unless the employer issues a notice of non-extension within the first 12 months.
Your future tasks:
The research group of Assistant Professor Mateos is based at the Institute of Organic Chemistry within the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Vienna. Our research interests lie in the interdisciplinary field of small-molecule activation. Currently, we focus on two main topics: the repurposing of standard chemicals and the expansion of knowledge in physical organic chemistry with the aim of designing new catalysts. PhD candidates in the Mateos group have the unique opportunity to work at the interface of organic synthesis, physical organic chemistry, and cutting-edge applications. In addition, you will be part of an international team.
You will actively contribute to research, teaching, and administration, which includes:
- participating in research projects and scientific studies in the field of organic chemistry.
- completing your doctoral thesis agreement within 12–18 months.
- working on and completing your dissertation.
- independently teaching courses in accordance with collective agreement regulations.
- taking on administrative tasks in research and teaching.
This is part of your personality:
- A Master’s degree or Diploma in chemistry or a related field.
- Experience in handling air-sensitive substances (particularly using glovebox techniques) is highly relevant.
- Experience in organic synthesis or catalysis is an advantage.
- Strong ability to analyze scientific publications.
- Excellent command of English, both written and spoken (IELTS score ≥ 6.5).
- A high level of problem-solving skills and a passion for research.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a research team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
What we offer:
Work-life balance: Our employees enjoy flexible working hours and can partially work remotely.
Inspiring working atmosphere: You are a part of an international academic team in a healthy and fair working environment.
