The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna is the largest Austrian institution of mathematical research and tertiary education in the mathematical sciences. It consists of active research groups in a wide range of fields, starting from logical foundations, bridging all classical core subjects, and up to concrete applications in industry. As part of the Faculty, the Institute of Mathematics represents the entire discipline of mathematics in research and teaching, without making an arbitrary separation into pure and applied fields.

Your professional field of activity:
The announcement comprises up to three PhD positions associated with the Faculty of Mathematics and, more specifically, with the Vienna School of Mathematics (VSM), for general enquiries please contact Prof. Dr. Andreas Cap. We are looking for independent scientists with a strong interest in research. For the purpose of this announcement, the VSM has asked its supervisors to submit proposals for directions for PhD projects, the collected suggestions are available online via https://www.vsmath.at//media/vsm_positions_jan26.html. The aim for filling up to three announced positions is to find excellent combinations of candidates and projects. Therefore, an application is only possible for specific projects from that list. Each candidate is allowed to apply for at most three of the projects. Successful candidates will be employed for a specific project, which also defines the requirements for the position.
Each of the announced positions is planned to be for 4 years; the initial employment duration will be 1.5 years and the employment will automatically be extended to a duration of 4 years unless the employer issues a non-extension notice within the first 12 months of the employment.
The envisaged employment date is October 1, 2026, in special cases earlier starting may be possible. The master study has tobe completed before the beginning of the employment, this must be conceivable at the time of the application.
Your future tasks:
Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:
Research:
+ participation in research activities depending on the chosen project
+ signing of a doctoral thesis agreement within 12 - 13 months
+ becoming a member of the VSM and actively participating in its activities and its administration
International and Interdisciplinary Collabortion:
+ willingness to participate in international and (depending on the project) interdisciplinary or applied research
+ participation in international conferences and workshops
Teaching and Administration:
+ conducting of examinations as well as participation in teaching evaluations and in administrative tasks
+ independent teacing of course (holding classes due to extent regulations of wage agreement).
Required Qualifications/Position Requirement:
- Diploma or master degree in mathematics, completed and certificate provided in due time before the start of the contract
- High level of competence in the area of mathematics appropriate for the chosen project(s)
- Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
- You are a team player with high social and communicative competence.
- You are goal-oriented and have a high motivation to strive for scientific excellence.
- You are not entitled to compensation for travel and accommodation expenses incurred in connection with the admission process.

Employment:The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a nonextension declaration.

Fixed-term contract and adequate salary: The basic salary corresponds to the collective agreement for employees of the universities according to § 48 VwGr. B1 basic level (praedoc): EUR 3.776,10 on a full-time basis (14 times per year). The actual salary is finally determined depending on professional experience and qualification. The gross salary covers all benefits of the employee in quantitative and qualitative terms (= all-in payment).
