About Us

UCL Faculty of Laws is a dynamic, highly respected and friendly community, which enjoys global recognition for the quality of its teaching and research. For almost 200 years, UCL Laws has been one of the leading centres of legal education in the world.

We believe research and education should make difference; a difference to thinking about law, to the practice of law, and to the administration of justice. Our scholarship and research-led education draws on doctrine, theory, and social science, and is interdisciplinary and global in nature. We have achieved the highest ratings in the last four instances of the Research Excellence Framework (REF), including being the top ranked law school in the UK REF2021 (highest GPA, highest overall 4* results, and highest QI). We pride ourselves on the collaborative and welcoming atmosphere of UCL Laws, and our community of students, teachers, researchers and alumni enables its members to realise their potential.

About the opportunity

UCL Laws is offering two funded visiting research positions to outstanding international researchers, based outside the UK, wishing to pursue their own research for a period of 1-3 months at our Faculty and to deepen their relationship with our academic community:

  • Distinguished Visiting Fellows are senior researchers with an established international reputation in their area(s) of research specialisation
  • Early Career Visiting Fellows are junior researchers recognised as rising stars in their area(s) of research specialisation.

The Faculty offers support of up to £15,000 annually across the two positions towards relevant expenses incurred during the visit, including travel and accommodation. Funds are allocated based on reasonable budget, need and ensuring fair opportunity across the two positions.

Visiting Fellows are expected to contribute to the Faculty’s research and teaching activities, that is, to engage with the activities of relevant Research Centres/Groups, to participate in Faculty research seminars and events, and—so far as possible—to offer guest teaching and to meet with postgraduate research students. To this end, visits during the first (Autumn) and second (Spring) terms are strongly preferred.

How to Apply

To apply, please upload the following documents on the online portal:

  • CV (max. 2 A4 pages)
  • Cover letter detailing your interest in visiting UCL Laws and how you would contribute to Faculty life (1 A4 page)
  • Research proposal (1 A4 page)
  • Brief statement on current sources of funding and required financial support.

Applicants should disregard the ostensive names for attachments in the system and upload only the documents specifically requested above.

Please note the deadline for applications for visits during the 2026-27 academic year is Monday 2nd March 2026 (23:59 UK time). Applications will be reviewed by UCL Laws Dean’s Team members and applicants will be advised of the outcome of the selection process by early April 2026.

For informal enquiries, please contact UCL Laws Vice Dean (International) Prof Gracia Marín Durán at: Gracia.Marin-Duran@ucl.ac.uk.
