Primary Purpose of the Organization:

The mission of the Charles Waddell Chesnutt Library is to support the University in its educational, research and cultural endeavors through careful selection, acquisition, organization, and interpretation of information resources. In addition, the Chesnutt Library assumes its special role as a major cultural resource for the community and the region at large.

The Circulations Department (Access Services) of the Charles W. Chesnutt Library primary purpose is to provide the initial point of service and access to library services. This includes the charge and discharge of library books, audiovisual materials and resources in the technology lending program. The Circulation department provides access to and assistance with the use of library spaces including reservations of library spaces within Springshare. Additionally, the Circulation Department provides assistance with interlibrary loan, reserve and serves as a first point of contact to provide assistance with library resources and services to all users in a manner that are readily accessible to library patrons. The library user is our focus and excellent service to users is the mission of all circulation activities.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of this position is to provide effective Circulation services using the library's integrated library system and spring share to charge and discharge resources. The position holder also handles queries and the circulation of materials at the public service desk. The position assumes the responsibility of the Circulation department supervisor in the absence of the Head of Access Services. Possesses the ability to interact in an effective and courteous manner with students, faculty, and staff, in a diverse, multicultural, and nontraditional academic environment and with a wide range of public patrons and institutional contacts.

Manages the Library's circulating collections, including the Main Stacks, Curriculum Lab, Juvenile Fiction, and public spaces. Provides supervision of Access Services staff by planning, scheduling, and training work-study students and staff in the management of the library stacks and collections, the scheduling of the library's public spaces, and the charge and discharge of the library collections and tech lending in the library's integrated library system and Spring share. Conducts inventory and utilizes results to monitor collections. Submits a list of missing, lost, or damaged items to the Head of Access Services for reorder. Manages the space counts of library spaces and other related statistics kept by Access Services, including gate counts, bookstore returns, internal circulation, and technology usage. Ensures sweeps of spaces are done throughout the library a minimum twice a day. Works assigned schedule and performs other tasks as assigned.

Working Hours: This position working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and will be required to work rotating weekends as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Completion of high school and two years experience in office support, preferably as a library technician in a library.

Knowledge skills and abilities:

Program/Technical - Demonstrates a specialized knowledge of circulation policies and procedures. Demonstrates the effective use of the circulation module of the OCLC WMS. Springhare equipment modules and WMS ILL software. Updates records with financial and address information, and creates and updates bibliographic records for check-out purposes and for stacks maintenance with missing or located materials. Has a detailed knowledge and understanding of the Library of Congress Classification system and how items are to be arranged and shelved. Analyzes collection growth and develops plans to accommodate the growth in program areas that are added to the curriculum. Interprets and enforces university and library policies and procedures.

Client/Patron Service - Independently provides general and specific information to assist users with inquiries regarding the content of the different library collections, related circulation and ILL policies. Assists patrons with their research inquiries utilizing the technology available through OCLC WMS, the online catalog, Springshare, ILL, databases and online resources. When necessary refers questions to reference desk or appropriate place or person.

Data/Information/Records Management - Records, compiles and produces reports that analyze data taken from several sources which reflect collection usage (re-shelving), shelving of new titles, stacks items superseded; and inquiries from patrons of about the Library's collections. Submits monthly statistical and narrative reports to the supervisor including projections for collection growth and possible housing and space issues in the collection. Identifies materials to be sent to the bindery or performs minor repairs in-house.

Instruction - Instructs users on the basic guidelines, policies and procedures for the proper use and handling of materials in the library's collections, use of library spaces and services and using ILL. Develops basic instructional materials or finding aids.

Communication (Presentations, Oral and Written) - Greets and communicates clearly to library users about services, policies and procedures in the use of the collection. Answers questions promptly or refers patrons asking more complex questions. Draws up plans to communicate to library administration needed projects in the library's physical collections, and spaces.

Planning and Organizing Work/Supervision - Directs training, supervising and evaluating student workers. Ensures quality control of the shelvers' work in shifting and shelving and circulation of library resources. Oversees assigned tasks given to departmental members and provides feedback on their work. Supervises the circulation desk during evening and weekend rotation.
