NOTICE FOR THE AWARD OF GRANTS IN THE SCOPE OF R&D PROJECTS AND INSTITUTIONS

A tender is hereby opened for the award of one (1) Research Grant(s)(RG) under the project TERRASAFE, regarding the application topic “HORIZON-MISS-2023-SOIL-01-04”, of Department of Environment and Planning, under the following conditions:
- Scientific Area: Environmental Sciences and Engineering.
- Funding Source: European Commission.
- Admission Requirements:
- Master's degree holder enrolled in a non-degree-granting course integrated into the educational project of the University of Aveiro; *1*
- Master's degree in Environmental Science and Engineering or "Biological Resources, Territorial Enhancement and Sustainability". *2*
- Other Requirements: (i) Proven experience with compilation, processing and analysis of vector and raster geospatial data related to soil degradation, preferably in areas at risk of desertification; (ii) Proven experience, as an advanced user, with a GIS (e.g., ArcGIS or QGIS), with the R project for Statistical Computing and with programming in the Python language.
- Eligibility:Candidates who meet the requirements of point a) of paragraph 1 of article 2 of the Research Grant Holder Statute, as amended by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28, and also the provisions of article 9 of the Scientific Research Grant Regulations of the University of Aveiro are eligible.
- Work plan:The work aims to support the work related to the activities of WP3 ("Mapping and analysis of desertification risk, its causes and impacts") of the TERRASAFE project, with the main objective of deepening the knowledge of the impacts of climatic extremes on the degradation of terrestrial ecosystems in semi-arid and sub-humid areas. The tasks to be performed are: (i) create a geographic database, preferably in ArcGIS, with the relevant reference information available for one or more pilot areas of TERRASAFE; (ii) characterize the climate of this/these pilot area(s), for example using data from CHELSA, possibly verified against data from existing meteorological stations, with a special focus on extreme phenomena, namely droughts and episodes of intense rainfall; (iii) create a time series for one or more indicators of ecosystem degradation for one or more ecosystem(s) of this/these pilot area(s), namely indicators derived from satellite imagery; (iv) perform a statistical analysis of the association between the aforementioned indicators of ecosystem degradation and the aforementioned extreme climatic phenomena; (v) explore a “Machine Learning” analysis to explore the importance of other environmental and managerial factors in the spatial and temporal patterns of the ecosystem degradation indicator(s) of the pilot area(s); (vi) prepare a descriptive document, in English, of the tasks performed and the results obtained, in a format typically used by international peer-reviewed journals in the scientific area of the aforementioned work plan..
- Applicable legislation and regulations: Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow, as amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28; Scientific Research Scholarship Regulations of the University of Aveiro, Regulation No. 292/2020, published in the Official Gazette No. 61, 2nd Series, of March 26; Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16 (Legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions).
- Workplace: The work will be carried out at the Department of Environment and Planning (DAO) of the University of Aveiro, under the scientific guidance of Dr. Jan Jacob Keizer (DAO), together with Drs. Sónia Cristina Alexandre Gouveia (DETI) and Sofia Caçoilo Corticeiro (DAO).
- Duration of the grant(s): The grant, which is non-renewable, will have a duration of 12 months, with a planned start in October 2026, and may not under any circumstances exceed the limits defined in the Regulations for the type of grant in question, in accordance with paragraph 5 of article 8 of Regulation No. 292/2020, of February 28, published in the Official Gazette, No. 61, 2nd Series, of March 26 (Regulations for Scientific Research Grants of the University of Aveiro).
- Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the grant corresponds to €1.359,64, according to the table of monthly maintenance grant amounts, set out in Annex III of the University of Aveiro's Scientific Research Scholarship Regulations, an amount subject to any updates that may occur and that are applicable to it. The scholarship holder may also be reimbursed for the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Insurance, if they choose to join this scheme.
- Selection methods: The selection method to be used will be Curriculum Evaluation, with a weighting of 0 – 20 points, with the respective valuation of Academic Qualifications (20%); Proven experience relevant to the indicated profile (70%); Relevant supplementary training relevant to the indicated profile (10%).
- Composition of the Selection Jury: President: Dr. Jan Jacob Keizer; Full Members: Dr. Sónia Cristina Alexandre Gouveia and Dr. Sofia Caçoilo Corticeiro; Alternate Members: Dr. Ana Luísa Neto Caetano and Dr. Ana Rita Pessoa Vaz Van Hal Vasques.
- Deadline for applications (not be less than 10 working days) and how to submit applications: The competition is open from 31-08-2026 to 11-09-2026, and applications will only be accepted within the established deadline.
Applications must be formalized by sending an application letter accompanied by the following documents: (i) cover letter; (ii) Curriculum Vitae; (iii) academic qualifications certificate; (iv) a declaration of commitment stating that you meet the requirements for enrollment in a non-degree-granting academic course integrated into the educational project of the University of Aveiro or a copy of enrollment in a non-degree-granting academic course integrated into the educational project of the University of Aveiro; (v) other supporting documents considered relevant. You must also indicate the email address to which you agree to be notified for all purposes within the scope of this procedure.

- Form of publication/notification of results: The evaluation results will be published within a maximum of 60 working days from the deadline for submitting applications, by notifying the candidates. Candidates are informed, in a preliminary hearing, in accordance with the provisions of the Administrative Procedure Code, of the likely outcome of the final decision, and may, within 10 working days of this notification, comment on this decision. Appeals against the final results may be made to the Rector, to be submitted within 10 working days of the respective notification.
- Tender duration: The final ranking list of candidates will be valid until 31/01/2027 for the purpose of constituting a reserve list for selection.
