About the Project
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath is inviting applications for the following fully-funded PhD project.

Project Description:
The rapid growth of AI computing is driving unprecedented increases in data centre power demand, making high-voltage DC (HVDC) power distribution a key enabling technology for future AI infrastructure. This PhD project will investigate next-generation power architectures based on cryogenic cooling and superconducting technologies to deliver highly efficient, high-power-density AI data centres. The research will explore the integration of superconducting DC networks, cryogenic power electronics, and advanced thermal management. In addition, the project will leverage agentic AI and Omniverse-based digital twins to optimise the co-design of electrical and cooling systems, enabling intelligent, energy-efficient, and scalable AI power infrastructure for future gigawatt-scale AI factories.
Applicant Requirements
Applicants should hold, or expect to receive, a First Class or good Upper Second Class Honours degree (or the equivalent). A master’s level qualification would also be advantageous. Non-UK applicants must meet our English language entry requirement.
