Assistant Professor (Teaching) in Risk Management and Insurance
The Haskayne School of Business (HSB), University of Calgary, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) to teach courses in Risk Management and Insurance, and another business area (e.g., Finance, Accounting, Strategy). The appointment start date is July 1, 2026.
The position requires evidence or promise of teaching effectiveness and competency in teaching and learning. An awareness of how to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning practices, participation in reflective practice, and professional learning activities related to teaching and learning would be an asset. Duties include teaching undergraduate- and potentially graduate-level courses, scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), and service-related activities.
Faculty in the Risk Management and Insurance group within the Finance area at the Haskayne School of Business are engaged in a range of teaching, including undergraduate, Executive MBA, and Master of Management. We invite applications in any area of expertise within the risk management, insurance, finance, business and economics domain.
We expect candidates for the position to meet the following:
- A formal business education with a graduate-level degree focusing on management, finance, or economics (e.g., MBA or an equivalent degree is required, doctoral-level is preferred);
- Experience teaching a variety of risk management and insurance, finance, or other related business courses at the post-secondary level with a proven track record of effective and innovative pedagogy;
- Strong evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach to interacting with colleagues, students, and other stakeholders;
- An Insurance, Risk Management, or related Finance designation such as a FCIP (Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional), CRM (Canadian Risk Management), or CFA (Chartered Financial Certificate) is desired.
Expected duties include:
- Teaching undergraduate (and potentially graduate) courses in risk management and insurance, finance, or other business areas in Haskayne, including both core and elective offerings at introductory and advanced levels, with delivery in person and online.
- Teaching the equivalent of eight half-credit courses per year in the Haskayne School of Business. Approximately four half-credit courses will be Risk Management and Insurance courses and four will be in another area in Haskayne (e.g, finance, accounting, strategy).
- Engaging in continuous professional development and contributing to the community of practice in teaching and learning.
- Taking on service responsibilities within the Haskayne School of Business, with emphasis on enhancing student learning, fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion, and strengthening the teaching and learning environment.
- Participating in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and/or discipline-specific research, including peer-reviewed publications such as journal articles and case studies, the creation of shareable teaching materials, and dissemination at academic or professional conferences.
