The Faculty of Classics is seeking to appoint a fixed-term Assistant Professor in Classical Linguistics and Comparative Philology from 1 September 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter) for three years. Applications are invited from those with a primary research interest in Classical Linguistics and Comparative Philology: linguistics of the Greek language, linguistics of the Latin language, the comparative philology of the Indo-European languages with special reference to Greek and Latin. The successful applicant will benefit from the world-class facilities offered by the University and the generous support of research and teaching provided by the Faculty. Further information about the Faculty is available at www.classics.cam.ac.uk.

The successful candidate will be expected to take a full share of teaching and examining in Classical Linguistics and Comparative Philology at all levels from beginners to postgraduates, including the recruitment and supervision of graduate students, and to assist in administration as appropriate.

We are seeking an individual with a strong academic record and potential to make a significant contribution to the teaching and research of the Faculty. Candidates will need to show evidence of the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Good first degree and a doctorate in a relevant subject area (or clear evidence that completion of such a doctorate is imminent)
  • Evidence of ability to engage in high-level research in Classical Linguistics and/or Comparative Philology, with publications and participation in scholarly activity commensurate with stage of career
  • Potential to generate and publish research within their subject area that is internationally recognised as world leading
  • Evidence of ability to teach Classical Linguistics effectively, and at all relevant levels
  • Evidence of ability to teach Classical Greek and/or Latin
  • Ability to take an inclusive approach towards teaching and working with (or supporting) colleagues
  • Ability to play an effective role in the life and work of the Faculty as a whole and willingness to contribute equitably to administrative tasks of the Faculty
  • Ability to work as part of a team
