The Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland seeks applicants to fill a three-year, 70-75% Ph.D. position in a project called ICE-MELT: Holocene magma evolution and eruption timing at Langjökull: Connecting glacial retreat to volcanic eruptions.
The aim of the project is to investigate the link between glacial retreat and volcanic activity at Langjökull, Iceland, using a multidisciplinary approach including paleomagnetism, petrology and physical volcanology. The selected PhD student will be an integral part of every aspect of the proposed study: fieldwork, sample preparation, petrological and geochemical analysis, paleomagnetic dating, data processing and analysis, and publication writing. The planned research includes sampling campaigns and geological mapping at Prestahnúkur and Hveravellir volcanic systems, near the Langjökull glacier. An emphasis is given to a multidisciplinary approach combining geochemistry, paleomagnetism, and physical volcanology, giving the student the opportunity to learn multiple methods for constraining magma storage depths, eruption ages, and eruptive style during the project. The study will help us further our knowledge on how deglaciation influences volcanic systems, which is important for assessing volcanic hazards in Iceland and other glaciated volcanic regions.
The project leader and academic advisors of this project will be Dr. Elisa Piispa, Dr. Alberto Caracciolo and Dr. Rosie Cole.
Main tasks
- Investigation of the link between glacial retreat and volcanic eruptions at Langjökull using geophysical, petrological, and physical volcanology techniques.
- Paleomagnetic dating of lava flows
- Geochemical analysis (EMPA, ICP-OES, ICP-MS) and geothermobarometry modelling
- Geological mapping and photogrammetry

Skills/Qualifications
- A master's degree in Geophysics, Geology or other fields related to the project. The applicant must have completed this degree by the time the position begins
- Ability to work both independently and in a team
- Good collaboration and communication skills
- Proficiency in written and spoken English
- Ability to communicate research results, both spoken and written, at international conferences and in scientific journals
- Previous experience in rock magnetism and/or geochemistry is an advantage
Employment is furthermore contingent upon the applicant formally applying for PhD studies at the Faculty of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland and having the application approved by the faculty.
