During avian take-off there is an explosive conversion of metabolic to mechanical power in the legs. The biomechanics of this leg-driven dynamic process is well understood. Shortly after take-off birds rely solely on their wings to generate aerodynamic power, and avian cruising flight is also a well-researched area. However, the transition from legged- to winged-propulsion is nuanced, complicated, and unstudied. Critically, this transition period involves coupled inertial and aerodynamic effects of the legs and wings, and also a sophisticated flight control system to remain stable. This project will tackle the coupled aero-mechanics of this transition during avian take-offs.

The project will develop mathematical and computational physics models to simulate this behaviour at different levels of fidelity. In doing so it aims to unearth fundamental science understanding of the physical and control processes involved. In particular, the models will provide insights the reasons behind why extant birds demonstrate the transition manoeuvres that we see today, in favour of alternative strategies that may have existed in the past.

The project would be well-suited to a candidate with a background in engineering, physics, computer science, or a related discipline. It will utilise mathematical and computational methods that cross between the physical-biological sciences interface, and as such would suit a candidate who has an interest in interdisciplinary science.
