CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR TWO RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS (BI) FOR THE CIVITAS PROJECT: BRIDGING CITIZENSHIP AND SCIENCE FOR CLIMATE ADAPTATION IN COMMUNITIES OF THE NORTHERN REGION (NORTE2030-FEDER-02717100) AT THE CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND INTERVENTION IN EDUCATION (CIIE) OF THE FACULTY OF PSYCHOLOGY AND EDUCATION SCIENCES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO (FPCEUP)- BOLS-FPCEUP-26-18.
The Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP) welcomes applications for two (2) research studentships for holders of a Bachelor’s degree in Educational Sciences, within the scope of the project “Bridging Citizenship and Science for Climate Adaptation in Communities of the Northern Region” (NORTE2030-FEDER-02717100), co-funded by the Northern Regional Programme 2021-2027 (NORTE 2030), Portugal 2030, and the European Union. This project is being carried out at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE), Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP), under the coordination of Isabel Menezes, Full Professor at FPCEUP.
CIVITAS project (2025-2028) aims to bridge the gap between the scientific and technological knowledge on climate change produced at the University and the communities where its impacts are experienced in everyday life. The project involves generating knowledge on the challenges and risks arising from climate change, as well as on strategies to address and mitigate them, and sharing this knowledge with citizens through deliberative and co-creation processes. These processes will lead to the development of recommendations for climate change mitigation and adaptation measures tailored to the specific needs of each local context.

- Admission requirements, to be proven by documentary evidence:
All individuals of legal age who meet the requirements below, supported by documentary evidence, may apply for these studentships:- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Educational Sciences or in other fields relevant to the project.
- Be enrolled in a master’s programme in Educational Sciences, a requirement to be proven at the time of the contract signing. Alternatively, applicants may be enrolled in a non-degree course that is part of the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, a requirement to be evidenced at the time of contract signing.
- Proficiency in the Portuguese language (applicants of foreign nationality, with the exception of those from Portuguese-speaking countries, must demonstrate proficiency in spoken and written Portuguese at Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level B1 or above; this requirement must be officially certified by means of a certificate or diploma attesting communicative competence in Portuguese, in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe).
- Proficient command of the English language (to be assessed during the interview stage for applicants admitted to the selection process).
- Preferred requirements (for which documentary evidence must be provided):
- Proven experience in research activities, particularly those related to the project’s theme, acquired through academic study and/or participation in funded research projects (applicants must submit a copy of their master’s dissertation and/or a statement from a project PI specifying the research tasks in which they were involved).
- Experience of working (including in a voluntary capacity) with children, young people or adults in schools or other formal or informal educational settings.
- Proficient command of English (to be assessed during the interview stage for candidates shortlisted to the second stage of the recruitment process, where applicable).
- Interest in and commitment to undertaking a master’s research on the project’s topic.
- Immediate availability and willingness to travel within Portugal (to be stated in the motivation letter).
- Work plan:
The studentship holders will support the project team in carrying out the tasks outlined in the application, while also collaborating on other activities aligned with the project’s objectives, namely providing support for the following tasks:- Conducting literature reviews on the themes of the project.
- Assisting with data collection and analysis within the scope of the project.
- Liaising with teachers and schools and supporting the delivery of the planned training activities.
- Assisting in the preparation and implementation of citizens’ assemblies.
- Contributing to the preparation of reports and scientific publications, and presenting research at scientific conferences.
- Supporting the organisation of meetings and scientific dissemination events.
- Assisting in other functions to support the management and execution of the project’s research and dissemination activities.
- Applicable law and regulation:
The call for applications and the award of the research studentships shall be governed by the provisions set out in the following legislation and regulations: Research Studentship Regulation of the University of Porto – approved by Regulation 582/2026, published in Diário da República, 2nd Series, no. 96, of 19 May. legal framework for the Recognition of Academic Degrees and Higher Education Diplomas Awarded by Foreign Higher Education Institutions; Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by the Decree-Law no. 4/2015, on 7 January; the Research Studentship Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. 40/2004, on 18 August, in its current wording published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, on 28 August; Research Studentship Regulation no. 950/2019, of 16 December, of the FCT, in its current wording; and other applicable rules. - Workplace:
The workplace shall be located at the CIIE facilities at FPCEUP, Rua Alfredo Allen, 4200-135 Porto, or at other locations as necessary to carry out the work plan, under the scientific supervision of Isabel Menezes. - Duration of the studentships:
- The research studentships will be awarded for an initial period of 12 months, on an exclusive basis, and may be renewed for further periods of equal or different duration, subject to the institution’s needs and the availability of funding, up to the maximum duration of the project. Under no circumstances may the total duration of the studentships exceed the limits established in the Regulations for this type of research studentship.
- For enrolment in non-degree study programmes, the studentships may be awarded for a maximum period of one year. In the case of holders of a bachelor’s degree enrolled in non-degree study programmes, the studentships may only be awarded to applicants who, upon entering into the relevant studentship agreement, including any permitted renewals, will not exceed a cumulative period of two years under this type of studentship, whether consecutive or non-consecutive.
- Monthly maintenance allowance:
- The monthly maintenance allowances are €1,090.98, in accordance with Annex I of Regulation No. 582/2026, as updated by Rector’s Order No. GR01/04/2026 of 2 April 2026, which revised the value of research studentships at the University of Porto for the year 2026.
- The allowances will be paid by FPCEUP by bank transfer. In addition to the monthly maintenance allowance, the studentship holders will be covered by personal accident insurance.
- The studentship holders can join the voluntary social security scheme (seguro social voluntário), provided that the studentships are awarded for a period of at least six months. Enrolment is optional, and the corresponding reimbursement is limited to the amount payable under the first contribution level of the contributory base.
- Selection methods:
- The selection methods are as follows: curriculum evaluation (AC) with a weighting of 70% and, optionally, supplemented by an interview (ENT) with a weighting of 30%, which will only take place when the panel considers that the AC does not allow it to clarify, as intended, the actual skills of the candidates or to distinguish which candidates are best suited to the positions and duties to be performed. If applicable, the interview will be held with the four candidates with the highest AC scores.
- Each member of the selection panel evaluates the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 100 points.
- The criteria and weighting factors for the curriculum evaluation (AC) are as follows:
- Academic background and its relevance to the project’s themes and activities (40%).
- Proven experience in the use of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies (15%).
- Experience of working with children and/or young people in schools or other formal or informal educational settings (15%).
- Commitment to undertaking a master’s dissertation related to the project’s theme (20%).
- Motivation and interest in the project’s theme (10%).
- If the interview is held, it will evaluate:
- Communication skills and verbal fluency in Portuguese and English (40%).
- Specific knowledge for carrying out the work plan (60%).
- Candidates may request authorisation from the chair of the selection panel to conduct their interview via videoconference, stating their reasons for doing so.
- Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process will be considered as withdrawal from the competition, and candidates will be excluded from the competition.
- The Final Classification (CF) will be obtained by applying the following formula: CF = (0.70*AC) + (0.30*ENT).
- Candidates who obtain a score of 50 points or less in the CF will be excluded from the competition.
- This competition is intended exclusively to fill the vacancy indicated above. Should none of the applicants demonstrate the profile required to carry out the described work plan, the selection panel reserves the right not to award the positions.

Chairperson: Isabel Menezes, Full Professor at FPCEUP and project PI. Members: Paulo Marinho, Assistant Professor at FPCEUP; Sara Pinheiro, Researcher at CIIE/FPCEUP. Substitute members: Sofia Marques da Silva, Associate Professor at FPCEUP; Preciosa Fernandes, Associate Professor at FPCEUP. - Application procedure and deadline:
- Applications must be submitted by 04 september 2026 (23:59 Lisbon time).

- Applications must be accompanied by documentary evidence demonstrating compliance with the eligibility requirements set out in this Notice, including:
- Curriculum vitae (in Portuguese), with full name, address and e-mail, and detailing previous experience in research projects and other responsibilities and tasks in which the applicant has been involved.
- A copy of the certificate(s) of the required academic qualification(s) and, where the qualification was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, proof of degree recognition, demonstrating compliance with the minimum eligibility requirement set out in point 2(a) of this Notice (proof of degree recognition may be submitted up to the time of contract signing).
- Proof of enrolment in a Master’s programme in Educational Sciences or, alternatively, in a nondegree course forming part of the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, demonstrating compliance with the minimum eligibility requirement set out in point 2(b) of this Notice (to be provided no later than the time of contract signing).
- Letter of motivation in Portuguese (max. 1000 words) reflecting the different curriculum evaluation criteria (point 9 of this public notice).
- If the candidate is not a native speaker of Portuguese, a document proving that the candidate has the required language skills.
- Declaration of eligibility (as attached).
- Where applicable, a declaration on honour confirming that a master’s dissertation topic related to the project’s research themes will be chosen.
- Other evidence of experience and knowledge that constitute the conditions of preference in point 3 of this notice.
- Failure to meet the application deadline, failure to submit the documents referred to in points a) to f) of paragraph 11.3, or submission of these documents after the deadline will result in the application being rejected.
- The documents referred to in point 11.3 should be submitted in a non-editable format.
- The selection panel may, whenever it deems necessary, request candidates to submit additional documents relating to the facts referred to in the curriculum vitae submitted, setting a deadline for this purpose, under the following terms:
- The aforementioned documentation is not intended for the submission of elements not referenced in the curriculum vitae, nor for the addition of missing documents required in this public notice.

- False statements:
False statements made by applicants will be prosecuted under the law. - Publication and notification of results:
- All notifications under this procedure will be made by email, via the APPLY platform.
- Notifications shall be made by email, in accordance with Articles 112(1)(c) and 113(5) of the Code of Administrative Procedure.
- In accordance with Article 121 and the following provisions of the Portuguese Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), applicants shall have 10 working days from the date of notification to submit written comments.
- Reserve list:
Based on the final ranking list, a reserve list will be created and may be used in cases of withdrawal, failure to submit documentation/or expected termination. The Faculty reserves the right to call the next candidate(s) on the list as necessary, as deemed appropriate and convenient by the Faculty. If the candidate holds a Master degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, following the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 August, which approves the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and Article 4 (2) (e) of Decree-Law no. 60/2018 of 3 August, and any formalities established therein be fulfilled up to the date of the contracting act.
Proof of enrolment in a doctoral programme must be submitted by the date of contract signature. For the purposes of the application, candidates may submit a declaration on their honour stating that they fulfil the enrolment requirements.
