CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 1 (ONE) RESEARCH FEllowship (BI) UNDER THE PROJECT “ICHEM4M – INNOVATION IN CHEMISTRY FOR CRITICAL RAW MATERIALS” (REF. NORTE2030-FEDER-02706400), CURRENTLY UNDERWAY AT CETAPS (CENTER FOR ENGLISH, TRANSLATION, AND ANGLO-PORTUGUESE STUDIES) OF THE FACULTY OF Arts and Humanities AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO
This call for applications is now open for the award of 1 (One) Research Fellowship (BI) for master’s students, integrated master’s students, or bachelor’s and master’s degree holders enrolled in non-degree-granting courses/CNCG, to carry out R&D activities within the scope of the “iChem4M” project -“Innovation in Chemistry for Critical Raw Materials” (Ref. NORTE2030-FEDER-02706400), co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), under the Northern Regional Program for 2021-2027 (NORTE2030), under Call NORTE2030-2024-84 (SACCCT - Support System for the Creation of Scientific and Technological Knowledge - Integrated R&D&I Projects), currently underway at CETAPS (Centre for English, Translation, and Anglo-Portuguese Studies) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP), under the following conditions:

3. Admission Requirements
All individuals of legal age who meet the following requirements, as documented, are eligible to apply for this scholarship:
- A bachelor’s degree completed in the scientific field of the competition (Social Sciences and Humanities) or related fields.
- Be a student in a master’s program, an integrated master’s program, or a bachelor’s or master’s degree holder enrolled in non-degree-granting courses/CNCG at a higher education institution (to be verified by the time of hiring).
4. Preferred conditions:
- Interest in utopian studies and/or futures studies (to be assessed based on academic background, CV, and/or cover letter);
- Interest and/or experience in conducting interviews and/or focus groups;
- Interest in the field of Digital Humanities and skills in using digital media from a user perspective;
- Language proficiency in English (minimum level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
- Proven research skills in the scientific area of the call.
5. Work plan:
5.1. The main tasks to be carried out under the scholarship will be:
- Prepare the submission request for ethical approval to the Ethics Committee of FLUP, as well as to the Data Protection Unit of the University of Porto;
- Develop scripts and data collection materials (namely for conducting Future Labs workshops), conduct the workshops, and carry out data analysis;
- Contribute to the activities of the CETAPS Digital Laboratory related to the project, particularly in identifying and analyzing science fiction works related to the project’s theme using Digital Humanities methods;
- Collaborate in the production of a scientific research output to be submitted to a specialized journal or conference.
5.2. When the academic degree or diploma is awarded during the term of the grant contract, the grant may continue provided that the activities outlined in the work plan have not yet been completed and under the terms specifically set out in the call notice and the contract, in accordance with paragraph 6 of Article 10 of the University of Porto Research Grant Regulations.
6. Applicable legislation and regulations:
The call and the awarding of the grant are governed by the provisions of the University of Porto Research Grant Regulations – approved by Regulation no. 582/2021, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, no. 43, of March 3; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015, of January 7; and the Research Fellow Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. 40/2004, of August 18, as amended and republished by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28; the Research Grant Regulations, no. 950/2019, of December 16, of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), I.P., in its current version, and other applicable regulations.
7. Workplace:
The work will be carried out at CETAPS of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP), or at other locations necessary for the execution of the work plan, under the scientific supervision of Luciano Moreira, Ph.D., and Fátima Vieira, Ph.D.
8. Duration of the grant:
The grant will have a duration of 3 months, with an expected start date in October 2026. The grant contract, on an exclusive basis, may be renewed for equal or different periods, depending on institutional needs and financial availability. Under no circumstances may the grant exceed a total duration of two years when awarded to a student enrolled in a master’s degree, or one year when awarded to a holder of an academic degree enrolled in a non-degree study cycle, in accordance with paragraph 3 of Article 10 of the University of Porto Research Grant Regulations.
The project is expected to end on 2028-03-31.
9. Monthly maintenance allowance:
9.1. The monthly maintenance allowance amounts to €1,090.98, in accordance with Annex I of the University of Porto Research Grant Regulations, updated based on the FCT grant values for 2026.
9.2. Payment will be made by FLUP via bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the grant holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.
9.3. The grant holder may opt to join the Voluntary Social Security scheme (applicable for grant contracts of six months or more), with reimbursement of the contribution corresponding to the first tier of the contributory base being optional.
10. Selection methods:
10.1. The selection methods are as follows: Curriculum Evaluation (CE), with a weighting of 70%; Motivation and Written English Language Proficiency (MWELP), with a weighting of 10%; and a Selection Interview (SI), partially conducted in English, with a weighting of 20%. The interview will be conducted only with the top-ranked candidates in CE and MWELP, up to a maximum of five (5).
10.2. Each member of the Selection Committee will evaluate the selection methods on a scale from 0 to 20 points.
10.3. Criteria and weighting factors for the Curriculum Evaluation (CE):
AC1 – Relevance of the academic background to the scientific field and topic(s) covered by the call for applications, with a weight of 50%;
AC2 – Participation in scientific activities, specifically scientific output, support for the conduct of activities, and/or collaborations in the production and dissemination of knowledge, weighted at 20%;
AC3 – Other relevant academic and/or professional experience(s) in the field and topic(s) of the competition, weighted at 20%;
AC4 – Letter of motivation, written in English, taking into account the quality of written expression, the clarity and coherence of the presentation, the relevance of the motivation to the purpose of the competition, the demonstration of interest and knowledge regarding the scientific field and topic(s) covered by the competition, as well as the candidate’s availability to begin the work plan, with a weighting of 10%.
10.5. The criteria and weighting factors for the selection interview (E) are as follows:
E1 – The candidate’s motivation and interest in utopian studies and futures studies, as well as the alignment of their profile with the objectives and activities of the competitive selection process, weighted at 60%;
E2 – Oral expression, communicative fluency, and linguistic competence in English, weighted at 40%.
10.6. Candidates who obtain a score equal to or below 14 points in the Curriculum Evaluation (CE) stage will be excluded.
10.7. The Selection Committee has decided that the interview will be conducted via videoconference.
10.8 Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process will be considered as withdrawal from the competition, and candidates will be excluded.
10.9. The Final Classification will be calculated using the following formula:
FC = 0.70 × CE + 0.30 × SI
10.10. This call is exclusively intended to fill the indicated vacancy. If no candidate demonstrates the required profile to carry out the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Selection Committee reserves the right not to award the position.

1st Full Member: Luciano José Santos Reis Moreira, Assistant Researcher at FLUP and Coordinator of the CETAPS Digital Laboratory;
2nd Full Member: Carla Susana Lopes Morais, Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP);
1st Alternate Member: Márcia Diana Fernandes Lemos, Assistant Professor at FLUP;
2nd Alternate Member: Marinela Carvalho Freitas, Assistant Professor at FLUP.
12. Application procedure and deadline:
12.1. Applications must be submitted by September 28th 2026.

12.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving that the candidate meets the conditions set out in this Call, namely:
- The candidate’s curriculum vitae, including full name and email address;
- A letter of motivation written in English, to facilitate the evaluation of point 10.3, criterion AC4, of this call for applications, indicating availability to begin the work plan;
- Ccopy of the certificate(s) for the required qualifications;
- A copy of a certificate, diploma, or diploma supplement from higher education proving the level of English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (QECR);
- Proof of enrollment in a Master’s program or in a non-degree course at a higher education institution (to be provided up to the time of contract signing);
- Record of recognition of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions and record of the conversion of the respective final grade to the Portuguese grading scale, to be submitted by the time of hiring, if applicable;
- Declaration of eligibility (attached).
- Other supporting documents demonstrating the experience and knowledge that constitute preferential criteria in order to better evaluate point 4.
12.4. Candidates may also submit any other documents they consider relevant for the assessment of their merit.
12.5. Failure to comply with the application deadline, or failure to submit the documents listed in points a), b), c), d) and g) of section 12.3 within the deadline, will result in the exclusion of the application.
12.6. The Selection Committee may, whenever it deems necessary, request candidates to submit additional documents to support the information provided in their curriculum vitae, setting a deadline for this purpose, under the following terms:
- The requested documentation is not intended for the submission of information not referenced in the curriculum vitae, nor for the inclusion of missing documents required under this Call;
- All candidates will be informed whenever additional documentation has been requested.
13. False declarations:
Any false statements made by candidates will be penalized in accordance with the law.
14. Method of publication/notification of results:
14.1. All notifications within the scope of this procedure will be made by email through the APPLY platform.
14.2. Notifications are carried out by email, in accordance with Articles 112(1)(c) and 113(5) of the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA).
14.3. Under Article 121 and following of the CPA, after being notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit their comments in writing.
15. Reserve list:
A reserve list will be drawn up based on the final ranking list and may be used in the event that the candidate ranked first withdraws. The highest authority of the Faculty reserves the right to call the next candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 months from the date of approval of the final ranking list.
