CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE AWARD OF 1 (ONE) RESEARCH INITIATION SCHOLARSHIP (BII), AS PART OF THE PROJECT “DEEP-SEA MINDING: BRINGING UP SOCIO-SCIENTIFIC ISSUES TO SCIENCE TEACHING THROUGH MULTILINEAR LEARNING APPROACHES (DSEAM)” (REF. 2023.18409. ICDT), FUNDED BY THE FOUNDATION FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY THROUGH NATIONAL FUNDS, CURRENTLY UNDERWAY AT THE FACULTY OF LETTERS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO (FLUP)
A call for applications is now open for 1 (one) Research Initiation Fellowship (BII), aimed at beginning scientific training, as part of the project “Deep-sea Minding: bringing up socio-scientific issues to science teaching through multilinear learning approaches (DSeaM)” (Ref. 2023.18409. ICDT), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology through national funds, under the following conditions:
1. Scientific Field(s): Digital Media, Multimedia, Computer Science, Information Science, Data Science.
2. Number of openings: One (1)
3. Eligibility Requirements:
All individuals of legal age who meet the following requirements, as verified by supporting documentation, are eligible to apply for this scholarship:
a) Be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program, an integrated master’s program, or a master’s degree program, or be a holder of a bachelor’s degree who is enrolled in a non-degree program in one of the scientific fields specified in this call for applications or in related fields;
b) Not have previously received a research grant funded directly or indirectly by the FCT.
4. Preferred qualifications:
a) Interest in the field of digital humanities and data visualization;
b) Experience using and customizing CMS (WordPress, Drupal);
c) Proven programming skills, including R, Python, PHP, and SQL;
d) Proficiency in English;
e) Proven research skills in the scientific field of the competition.
5. Work Plan:
5.1. The main tasks to be performed as part of the fellowship will be:
a) Participate in research and outreach activities related to the project;
b) Actively contribute to the creation and development of websites and web applications, including API development;
c) Contribute to data processing, analysis, and visualization activities using text mining techniques, based on distant reading models;
d) Contribute to the production of interactive web visualizations;
e) Collaborate on the production of scientific research papers to be submitted to specialized journals or conferences.
5.2. When an academic degree or diploma is awarded during the term of the fellowship agreement, the fellowship may continue provided that the activities set forth in the work plan have not been completed and in accordance with the specific terms set forth in the call for applications and in the agreement, pursuant to Article 10(6) of the Regulation.
6. Applicable legislation and regulations:
The selection process and the awarding of the scholarship are governed by the provisions set forth in the University of Porto’s Research Scholarship Regulations—approved by Regulation No. 582/2026, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, No. 96, of May 19; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law No. 4/2015, dated January 7; and Statute of the Research Fellow (EBI), approved by Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, as currently amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28; Regulation on Research Grants No. 950/2019, dated December 16, 2019, of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), I.P., in its current version, and other applicable regulations.
7. Work Location:
The work will be carried out at the Center for English, Translation, and Anglo-Portuguese Studies (CETAPS) at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (FLUP), or at other locations necessary for the execution of the work plan, under the academic supervision of Dr. Luciano Moreira.
8. Duration of the fellowship:
The research fellowship will last 3 months, with an estimated start date in October 2026. The fellowship contract is exclusive and may be renewed, if necessary, in accordance with institutional needs, up to the deadline for completing the work plan, but no later than the project’s completion date and, under no circumstances, may it exceed the limits defined in Regulation No. 184/2021 for the type of fellowship in question. The project is scheduled to end on December 30, 2028.
9. Amount of the Monthly Living Allowance:
9.1. The amount of the monthly living allowance is €701.12, as set forth in the table of living allowance amounts attached to the University of Porto Research Fellowship Regulations.
9.2 Payment will be made by FLUP via bank transfer. In addition to this stipend, the scholarship recipient will be covered by personal accident insurance.
9.3. The scholarship recipient may enroll in Voluntary Social Security (valid for scholarship contracts of six months or longer); enrollment is optional (not mandatory), and reimbursement corresponds to the first bracket of the contribution base.
10. Selection Methods:
10.1. The selection methods are as follows: Academic Evaluation (AC), weighted at 70%; and Selection Interview (E), conducted partially in English, weighted at 30%, to be held for the candidates with the highest scores on the AC, up to a maximum of 5 (five).
10.2. Each member of the Selection Committee evaluates the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 20 points.
10.3. The criteria and weighting factors for the Academic Record Evaluation (AC) are as follows:
AC1 – Relevance of the academic background to the scientific field and topic(s) covered by the call for applications, with a weight of 50%;
AC2 – Participation in scientific activities, specifically scientific output, support for the conduct of activities, and/or collaborations in the production and dissemination of knowledge, weighted at 20%;
AC3 – Other relevant academic and/or professional experience(s) in the field and topic(s) of the competition, weighted at 20%;
AC4 – Letter of motivation, written in English, taking into account the quality of written expression, the clarity and coherence of the presentation, the relevance of the motivation to the purpose of the competition, the demonstration of interest and knowledge regarding the scientific field and topic(s) covered by the competition, as well as the candidate’s availability to begin the work plan, with a weighting of 10%.
10.5. The criteria and weighting factors for the selection interview (E) are as follows:
E1 – The candidate’s motivation and interest in utopian studies and futures studies, as well as the alignment of their profile with the objectives and activities of the competitive selection process, weighted at 60%;
E2 – Oral expression, communicative fluency, and linguistic competence in English, weighted at 40%.
10.6. Candidates who receive a score of 14 points or less will be eliminated during the written exam phase.
10.7. The Selection Committee has decided that the interview will be conducted via videoconference.
10.8 Failure to attend the interview phase of the selection process is considered a withdrawal from the competition, and such candidates will be eliminated from the competition.
10.9. The Final Score (FS) will be calculated using the following formula:
FS = 0.70 × AC + 0.30 × E
10.10. This competition is intended exclusively to fill the specified vacancies; in the event that no candidate demonstrates the profile required to carry out the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Selection Committee reserves the right not to fill the position.

2nd Permanent Member: Carla Susana Lopes Morais, Assistant Professor with Aggregation at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP);
1st Alternate Member: Márcia Diana Fernandes Lemos, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (FLUP);
2nd Alternate Member: Marinela Carvalho Freitas, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (FLUP).
11. Submission Format and Deadline:
11.1. The call for applications is open from September 14 through September 28, 2026 (local time – Lisbon).
11.2. Applications must be submitted through the online application system available on the APPLY website: https://www.apply.up.pt (Ref. BOLS-FLUP-26-10).
11.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving compliance with the conditions set forth in this Notice, namely:
a) Curriculum vitae, The candidate’s resume, including their full name and email address
b) A letter of motivation written in English, to facilitate the evaluation of point 10.3, criterion AC4, of this call for applications, indicating availability to begin the work plan;
c) Copy of the certificate(s) for the required qualifications. Copy of a certificate, diploma, or diploma supplement from a higher education institution attesting to the level of English proficiency in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR);
d) Proof of enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program, an integrated master’s program, a master’s degree program, or a non-degree program at a higher education institution (to be verified by the time of hiring);
e) Recognition of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions and a record of the conversion of the respective final grade to the Portuguese grading scale, to be submitted by the time of hiring, if applicable;
f) Statement of eligibility (attached).
g) Other evidence of experience and knowledge that constitute preferential criteria in order to better evaluate point 4.
11.4. Applicants may also submit any other documents they deem relevant to the evaluation of their qualifications.
11.5. Failure to meet the deadline for submitting the application, or failure to submit—or late submission of—the documents referred to in subparagraphs (a), (b), (c), and (f) of paragraph 11.3, will result in the exclusion of the application.
11.6. The documents mentioned in section 11.3 must be submitted in a non-editable format; the preferred file format is “Portable Document Format” (.pdf).
11.7. The Selection Committee may, whenever it deems necessary, request that applicants submit supplementary documentation regarding the facts mentioned in the submitted resume, setting a deadline for such submission, under the following terms:
a) the requested documentation is not intended for the submission of information not referenced in the resume, nor for the inclusion of missing documents required by this Notice;
b) all applicants are notified that supplementary documentation has been requested.
12. False statements:
False statements made by applicants will be punished in accordance with the law.
13. Method of Publication/Notification of Results:
13.1. Applicants will be notified of the minutes pertaining to the application evaluation phase(s) via email, sent to the address they provide for this purpose, with a delivery confirmation.
13.2. Notifications are sent by email, in accordance with Articles 112(1)(c) and 13.3(5) of the CPA.
13.3. Pursuant to the provisions of Article 121 et seq. of the CPA, after being notified, candidates have 10 business days to respond in writing.
14. Reserve List:
A reserve list will be drawn up based on the final ranking list, which may be used in the event that the candidate ranked first withdraws. The Faculty’s highest authority reserves the right to call upon the next candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 months from the date of approval of the final ranking list.
