Offer Description
Doctoral Candidate F/M (research and technical staff) for the project Influence of Elevated Pressure on Co-amorphous Pharmaceuticals (D3)
IDEAS - Improving drug efficacy with next-generation amorphous materials and trained experts.
The Marie-Skłodowska Curie Doctoral Network (MSCA DN): “Improving drug efficacy with next-generation amorphous materials and trained experts”, (IDEAS) funded by the European Community is recruiting 15 young researchers.
The doctoral candidates (DCs) will be trained not only to perform original and independent research on an internationally competitive level, but also in developing creative, critical and entrepreneurial mindsets, to be prepared for a wide spectrum of career opportunities.
The IDEAS Doctoral Network is designed to empower a new generation of young scientists in the field of amorphous pharmaceutical systems, strengthening Europe’s biotech/pharma industry and academic innovation capacity. This effort demands a unified project bringing together the cross-disciplinary expertise of academic research groups in materials science, physics, chemistry, and pharmacy, alongside industry partners. The network comprises a consortium of 7 universities (University of Lille, University of Pisa, University of Silesia in Katowice, Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Université Catholique de Louvain, Trinity College Dublin, NOVA University of Lisbon), 2 large companies (Janssen Pharmaceutica, Zentiva) and 1 SME (MyBiotech). Through this programme, the fellows will collaborate to develop eco-friendly manufacturing technologies for amorphous materials, establish science-based control over material properties, and explore a wide range of materials to achieve efficient production of high-quality amorphous formulations. This advanced research-driven training will be further enriched with dedicated training events (e.g., online and in-person workshops, summer schools) and intersectoral and interdisciplinary mobility through secondments. After having completed their studies and the IDEAS programme, this innovative and multidisciplinary training will qualify this new generation of scientists not only for an academic career, but also for working in industry and beyond.

Research project description
DC 3 at University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland) – Influence of elevated pressure on co-amorphous pharmaceuticals.
Context: Industrial pharmaceutical processes such as tableting, encapsulation, hot-melt extrusion, and high-pressure homogenization frequently subject materials to elevated pressures and mechanical stresses that can profoundly influence their physical state. While such stresses may trigger crystallization or enhance amorphous stability, the mechanisms governing these competing effects remain poorly understood.
Objectives: This project aims to elucidate the impact of elevated pressure on the structural, dynamical, and thermodynamic properties of co-amorphous pharmaceutical systems. Understanding the effects of pressure is of critical importance, as numerous industrial pharmaceutical processes such as tableting, encapsulation, hot-melt extrusion, and high-pressure homogenization expose materials to mechanical stresses. These stresses can either trigger crystallisation or enhance amorphous stability, yet the role of pressure in modulating amorphous–crystalline transitions remains insufficiently understood. By employing advanced high-pressure experimental techniques, this project aims to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms governing pressure-induced changes in the physical stability of co-amorphous pharmaceutical systems.
Expected results: Improved understanding of how elevated pressure influences the physical stability of co-amorphous pharmaceutical systems. Identification of whether the investigated systems exhibit pressure-stabilised or pressure-destabilised behaviour, and determination of conditions that minimise crystallisation during pharmaceutical processing. Development of concentration–temperature–pressure stability maps for the selected co-amorphous systems to support rational formulation design.
Research Methodology: The doctoral candidate will employ differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to characterise the thermal properties of co-amorphous pharmaceutical systems, and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) to investigate their molecular dynamics and physical stability under ambient-pressure conditions. Additionally, high-pressure BDS measurements will be performed to investigate the influence of elevated pressure on the molecular dynamics and physical stability of the investigated co-amorphous systems. These studies will be complemented by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements to assess the physical state of the investigated systems and detect potential crystallisation.
Planned secondments:
- Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Barcelona (Spain): Complementary studies on phase diagram.
- F1 Pharma, Kraków (Poland): Exposure of the DC to industry R&D. Study of aqueous solubility and dissolution profiles.
STARTING DATE: 1 April 2027
