SPLASH is a 48-month project hosted at the Alfred Jahn Cold Regions Research Centre, University of Wrocław, with three field deployments to Svalbard. It investigates the effects of mass movements (slush and debris flows) on Arctic lake systems and their link to climate response, treating the slope–lake system as a coupled process-response system. Project manager: dr Maciej Obryk.
Requirements
The candidate is required to have:
- PhD degree in geography, geology or related sciences (e.g. geophysics, environmental protection) obtained within 12 years prior to the year of employment in the project.
- Extensive, documented experience in conducting and documenting geophysical research, especially using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), in permafrost areas, as well as geological surveys and drilling operations—particularly using coring methods in bedrock and sedimentary material.
- Ability to process, invert and interpret GPR data and to integrate them with geomorphological and remote sensing data.
- strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, specifically including JCR-listed publications from renowned publishers (e.g., Wiley, Elsevier, Springer).
- Readiness to take part in multi-week field campaigns in the High Arctic (work on lake ice, from a small boat, at remote sites).
- Good command of written and spoken English; publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and to plan and run fieldwork independently.
Additional assets
- Experience gained during previous expeditions to polar and high mountain regions, particularly in Svalbard.
- Experience in sub-bottom profiling / hydro-acoustic methods, including surveys from lake ice or using underwater vehicles (UUV).
- Extensive knowledge of global climate change and the periglacial zone.
- Experience in low-altitude remote sensing (UAV, SfM) and with ArcGIS / QGIS / CloudCompare / Agisoft Metashape; data analysis in MATLAB or Python.
- Arctic field safety training (e.g. firearms / polar bear safety, wilderness first aid) – or willingness to complete it.
- Technical skills enabling the independent performance of basic technical maintenance on research equipment and the operation of technical devices in polar conditions.
Responsibilities
This Post-doc will lead the non-invasive subsurface mapping campaign to image the internal structure of the colluvial fans and debris cones, and conduct sub-bottom profiling (hydro-acoustics) from the lake ice or submarine drone missions to map the underwater extent of the fans and slides. The role is critical to resolving the 3D architecture of slush and debris flow deposits without relying solely on point-source data (sediment cores).
- Planning, conducting and documenting GPR profiles on fans and in the lake shore zone (Task 1, subtasks 1.2–1.4).
- Processing, inversion and interpretation of geophysical data and their integration with remote sensing (UAV/SfM, DEMs, ArcticDEM) and limnological datasets.
- Participation in field campaigns on Spitsbergen, including surveys from lake ice and from a small boat.
- Collaboration with the project team and with international advisors (University of South Bohemia, University of Bergen, University of Wisconsin).
- Preparing scientific publications (target journals incl. EGU journals, Geomorphology, ESPL) and presenting results at international conferences (e.g. EGU, AGU, ICOP).
- Opportunity to develop new methods in remote sensing and geophysical data analysis within the project scope.
The application for the competition should include
- Personal questionnaire (download Personal questionnaire).
- Curriculum vitae.
- Photocopy of the diploma attesting to the award of a doctoral degree.
- Statement whether the University of Wroclaw will be the primary place of work in the case of winning the competition (download Workplace Statement).
- Declaration of the discipline in which the candidate will conduct research and in the case of people conducting research in more than one discipline the percentage of their involvement in each of these disciplines (download Declaration of scientific discipline).
- Summary of research and educational accomplishments as well as others, connected with organization and popularization of research.
- List scientific publications in the period no longer than the last 10 years, conference presentations, previous experience and other achievements in the field of organization of scientific life and popularization of science.
- Electronic versions of the two most important publications that the applicant considers to be representative of his/her scientific output, or an explanation of their absence.
- Application for employment to the Rector of the University of Wrocław.
- Declaration – article 113 the Law on Higher Education and Science (download Declaration – Article 113).
