The University of Vienna invites outstanding candidates to apply for a doctoral position in the UniVie Doctoral School Computer Science DoCS as part of its STEM Call 2026, offering more than 40 funded doctoral positions in total.
Your personal sphere of influence:
The new work group by Prof. Lutz within the research group Workflow Systems and Technology has a broad research focus on topics of business analytics and operations research. The interdisciplinary group aims to develop novel approaches for solving complex decision problems and explaining human behavior in the usage of information technology. For this purpose, the group applies methods from reinforcement learning, explainable AI, natural language processing, and lab experiments. Applications should hence be interested in one or more of the aforementioned topics and/or methods. The particular topics will be determined based on the candidate’s skills and preferences.
Given its interdisciplinary focus, the group collaborates with researchers from both, computer science and business administration. The successful candidate can hence build on a strong network of fellow researchers with a strong knowledge of business analytics and operations research topics.
Your future tasks:
Participation in research, teaching and administration:
- Participation in research projects/research studies
- Participation in publications/academic articles/presentations
- We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months
- Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of students
- Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
This is part of your personality:
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Business Informatics, Information Systems, Data Science, Math or an equivalent qualification with excellent grades
- An excellent command of English and German (spoken and written)
- Meet the doctoral admission requirements of the University of Vienna by the start of employment
- Good programming skills, preferably in Python
- Strong ability to work in teams
- Perseverance and ability to get things done
- A high motivation and commitment to excel in your work
- Willingness to travel, attendance of national and international conferences

- Fair salary: A basic gross salary of EUR 3.714,80 (on a 40h/week basis) per month, 14 times a year.
- Model 2: The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration
