Job Duties:
The Disability Services Advisor supports the integration of students with disabilities into the UW-Whitewater community through direct student services, meeting accommodation needs, and ensuring equal access to the programs, services and activities of the institution. This position facilitates the provision of reasonable accommodations for university students with learning disabilities, mental health, chronic medical conditions, developmental disabilities (autism), physical and sensory disabilities, and ADHD. The Disability Services Advisor works directly with students, conducting intakes, reviewing documentation, and facilitating accommodation. This position may also participate in campus-wide training activities for students, faculty, and staff on disability issues, rights and responsibilities under the law, and advocacy regarding reasonable accommodation in a post-secondary environment.
The Disability Services Advisor oversees the Project ASSIST tutoring program, its graduate assistant, and student staff. This position will also serve as the Disability Services Advisor to students on the University of Wisconsin-Rock County campus and will be expected to work at the Rock campus location once a week as needed.
Essential Responsibilities/Duties
- Direct Student Service – 75%
- Conduct intake appointments leading to a service eligibility determination and recommendations for reasonable accommodations as appropriate.
- Assist students in understanding their legal rights and responsibilities.
- Promote student self-reliance and the development of appropriate self-advocacy skills.
- Interpret various psycho-educational and psychological/neuropsychological assessment batteries used in the diagnosis of learning disabilities, mental health disorders, AD/HD, developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injury and translate the data to appropriate accommodations plans in a post-secondary setting.
- Facilitate communication between faculty, staff, and students with disabilities on access and accommodation issues and provide on-going consultation and problem-solving assistance to faculty and staff in the provision of appropriate services and accommodations.
- Develop new and effective methods for resolving complex disability-related accommodation and adjustment issues.
- Communicate with parents/guardians of student clients respectfully and appropriately in a way that supports the development of student independence and accountability.
- Maintain confidentiality in verbal and written communications as required under the Family Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Create, organize, and maintain up-to-date electronic records.
- Stay abreast of legislation/policy and national, state, and local issues affecting access for individuals with disabilities.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize and manage a variety of tasks on the job, as well as contribute to team processes at the unit and division levels.
- Work within the Social Justice Model of Disability and support all student identities within the Division of Student Affairs.
- Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills in a fast-paced environment.

- Program Coordination-15%
- Train and supervise the Project ASSIST Graduate Assistant and associated student staff.
- Provide on-going support, information, and resources to staff on disabilities and related trends.
- Oversee operations and budget of Project ASSIST tutoring program.
- Administrative Duties - 10%
- Contribute to program development for current and emerging populations (e.g. services for veterans, students with autism, unrepresented groups, etc).
- Participate in division projects and activities (e.g., search and screen committees and processes, revision of eligibility criteria, outreach and communication practices with parents, etc.).
- Support on-campus committees and enrollment activities.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Provides information and resources regarding legal rights and responsibilities to populations with disabilities and their support systems.
- Provides consultative services to staff regarding appropriate services and accommodations.
- Consults with clinician professionals to evaluate access needs and allocate resources.
- Facilitates the interactive process in collaboration with populations with disabilities, students, instructors, and staff to determine reasonable accommodations.
- Assists in the development of programs and initiatives that promote awareness, sensitivity, advocacy, and competence in ensuring access for individuals with disabilities.
- Conducts intake assessments, maintains current data records, and determines eligibility for disability services.
Department: Center for Students with Disabilities
Compensation:
Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary of $56,000 commensurate with the candidate's education, related experience, and qualifications. Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Vocational Rehab, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Two or more years of direct experience working with individuals with disabilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preference given to applicants who have worked with a college or young adult population.
- Experience with educating, teaching, and/or coaching individuals with disabilities.
- Working knowledge of federal and state laws regarding disability rights.
- Masters Degree in Education, Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work or Rehab Counseling.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to interact respectfully with people with diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Vocational Rehab, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
