Professor of Peace and Conflict Research

At the Department of Peace and Conflict Research

Uppsala University announces a vacancy for a permanent position as Professor of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department is one of the world’s leading research environments in peace and conflict research with nearly forty faculty and researchers working at the forefront on topics related to political violence and peace. It is a dynamic and international academic environment with around 90 employees and 300–400 students from all over the world. More information about the Department can be found here: http://www.pcr.uu.se.

We are seeking an internationally recognized scholar who is interested in contributing to further developing the Department’s strong research and teaching environment.

The field of peace and conflict research is the multidisciplinary study of the causes, dynamics, and resolution of violent conflict and peace. Education and research at the Department are problem-driven, and the focus is on explaining empirical phenomena and their patterns, thereby integrating theory, methods, and empirical research.

Duties

  • Overall responsibility for research and third-cycle (doctoral) education in the field and its development.
  • Teaching and supervision in courses and programmes at all levels. Teaching and much of the supervision and scientific conversation at the department is performed in English.
  • Own research: The faculty’s ambition is that the appointee will dedicate at least half of their working hours to their own research.
  • Eligible for a paid sabbatical of one semester, currently every six years.
  • Expected to participate in, plan, and lead research projects (including applications for research funding) and engage in dialogue about research and developments in the field of peace and conflict research to actors outside of academia.
  • Duties of an administrative nature, including management roles at department and other levels at Uppsala University, may occur.

Required Qualifications

  • A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise is qualified for employment as a professor (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 3).
  • Research expertise:
    • Independent research contributions of very high international quality.
    • Expertise in planning, initiating, leading, and developing research.
    • Ability to obtain competitive research funding.
    • Well-documented experience supervising doctoral students.
  • Teaching expertise:
    • Extensive educational portfolio.
    • Well-documented experience supervising at first-cycle (undergraduate), second-cycle (Master’s), and third-cycle (doctoral) levels.
    • Must demonstrate ability to teach in English.
  • The teaching expertise, research expertise, and professional skill must be relevant to the subject matter of the position.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and meet suitability requirements for the duties.
  • Employees should learn Swedish to fully participate in collegial activities.

Assessment Criteria: Research and Educational Expertise

Primary weight is given to research and educational expertise, with particular attention to research expertise. Research quality is the main consideration, followed by the depth and breadth of research. Contributions to national and international academic communities will be assessed based on the quality and scope of scholarly publications. Research expertise must qualitatively and quantitatively exceed the requirements for docent status. Normally, the applicant must have been principal supervisor for at least one doctoral student to thesis defense. Teaching quality is evaluated with equal care, considering scope, planning, leadership, research-based teaching, and higher education pedagogy.

Assessment Criteria: Other Expertise

Administrative and relevant subject-specific expertise, team-working abilities, leadership skills, and potential for departmental and community collaboration. Experience of management responsibility at department level or similar is valuable. Selection is based on a holistic assessment of competence, potential to perform duties, and contribution to departmental development. Qualifications must be documented to allow assessment of quality and scope. Recruitment may involve interviews, trial lectures, and references. Personal circumstances (parental leave, part-time employment, union duties, military service, etc.) may be considered advantages.
