Job Summary/Basic Functions
Summer Foreign Language Instructor (Spanish I & II)
EKU Upward Bound - Summer Chautauqua 2026
The Eastern Kentucky University Upward Bound Program is seeking a qualified and engaging Summer Spanish Instructor to teach Spanish I and Spanish II during the 2026 Summer Chautauqua.
Program Overview
The Upward Bound Summer Chautauqua is a six-week, residential, college-preparatory program hosted on EKU's campus from June 13 - July 22, 2026. Students live on campus and participate in a structured, simulated college experience that emphasizes academic rigor, independence, and personal growth.
Instructional Dates
- Classes: June 15 - July 15, 2026
- Schedule: Monday through Friday (5 instructional weeks)
Teaching Load & Schedule
- Approximately 15-20 students per section
- Four instructional sections taught Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
o 8:40 a.m. - 3:20 p.m.
o Includes a 50-minute duty-free lunch - Four lab component sections taught on Thursdays
o 8:40 a.m. - 2:20 p.m.
o Includes a 50-minute duty-free lunch and 50-minute planning period
Course Expectations
- Courses are designed as credit-bearing high school Spanish I and II
- Instructor must demonstrate knowledge of Kentucky State Foreign Language Proficiency Standards
- Responsible for designing and implementing curriculum, including:
o Written and spoken language assessments
o Instruction aligned with proficiency-based learning
o Engaging, student-centered instructional strategies
Additional Responsibilities
- Attend a brief instructor orientation in late May
- Participate in the student awards banquet
- Attend an end-of-summer debrief meeting
Ideal Candidate
- Certified or qualified Spanish instructor with secondary-level experience preferred
- Strong classroom management and student engagement skills
- Ability to foster independence, academic confidence, and college readiness
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be able to demonstrate experience in field of expertise.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants with prior Upward Bound/TRIO programs experience or experience teaching traditionally under served populations.
Job Duties:
- 90% - Student Instruction, Classroom Management, Curriculum Development, Relationship Building, Skill Building - (Essential)
- 10% - Student Awards Banquet Preparation, Instructor Orientation, and other duties as assigned - (Essential)
