Job Summary
The Mills Institute at Northeastern University Upward Bound (MCUB) TRIO Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. MCUB is designed to enhance the academic skills of low-income first-generation college-bound high school students in the Oakland and West Contra Costa Unified School District with the goal that participants will pursue post-secondary education. The Summer Enrichment Program will provide academic instruction in core subjects: English, Sciences, and Mathematics. MCUB will also provide courses and workshops exploring various topics: Life Skills, Study Skills, College Preparation, Career Exploration, and Cultural Awareness.
Summer Enrichment Program Description
The MCUB Program offers a six-week summer academic enrichment program for students entering grades 9th-12th. The MCUB summer program will be conducted on the Mills College Campus. Staff orientations will likely take place June 11th from 10:30 am to 4 pm. Instruction for the MCUB Summer Program is scheduled to begin Monday, June 15th and continues through Thursday, July 23rd. The daily instructional schedule is 1:30pm-3:30pm, Monday - Thursday (Two 60-minute periods). Also, instructors will cover a tutoring period from 3:40pm to 5:30 PM Monday through Thursday. There will be no programming on June 19th and July 6th.
The Mills Institute at Northeastern University Upward Bound (MCUB) TRIO Program is currently seeking highly motivated, knowledgeable, creative, engaging, student focused, experienced educators to teach academic courses in Humanities, Mathematics, and Lab Sciences. Courses will be taught to students in high school students in rising 9th-12th grades.
Each course will be defined by:
- Small classes (up to 25 students)
- Daily in-class instruction, group work, real-world application of concepts taught, quizzes
- Pre & post assessments
- Instructors are given 12 off-site prep hours for each class taught.
Essential Job Functions:
- Develop a course proposal/set of lesson plans that state goals/objectives, student learning outcomes, methods needed to obtain goals/objectives/outcomes.
- Design and implement a course syllabus that effectively outlines daily concepts covered, in-class & homework assignments, quizzes, group work, projects, pre/post assessment.
- Establish classroom management policies and procedures needed to maintain a productive, engaging classroom environment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and support of MCUB mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior
- At the conclusion of the course, the instructor will write a narrative evaluation on each student.
- Participate in MCUB weekly staff meetings.
- Attend instructor orientation/planning sessions and program activities.
