Urban Planning Professor
The Faculty of Environmental Design at the Université de Montréal, founded in 1968, brings together three schools – the School of Architecture, the School of Design, and the School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture. Its mission is to develop knowledge and train high-caliber talent capable of contributing to the evolution, research, and innovation of environmental design practices. The Faculty offers around twenty research units and twenty-three academic programs, all dedicated to studying the interactions between humans and their environment, and to interventions in both built and natural environments.
The School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture is recognized for the excellence of its teaching, research, and contributions to the practice of urban planning and landscape architecture in Quebec. Studio-based teaching and guidance, along with a multi-scale approach to reflection, are fundamental components of our professional programs, which are accredited by the Ordre des urbanistes du Québec (OUQ) and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA).
Your Contribution
Your role at our School will be to strengthen the urban planning program and enhance its integration with landscape architecture training, in one of the following areas:
- Urban Development
- Urban Planning
- Project-based Urbanism
- with a focus on major global environmental, technological, and social challenges.
Your Daily Responsibilities
Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching and research activities, you will contribute to the Faculty’s pursuit of excellence. You will also help promote your discipline and actively participate in the operations of a prestigious institution. Specifically, you will:
- Teach lectures and seminars in the bachelor’s and master’s programs in Urban Planning, as well as in the interdisciplinary PhD in Environmental Design;
- Supervise students at all three academic levels, both in professional and research-based programs;
- Develop a high-level research program in one of the following areas: Urban Development, Urban Planning, or Project-based Urbanism;
- Contribute to the integration of the urban planning and landscape architecture programs;
- Actively participate in the academic life and governance of the School, the Faculty, and the University through committee and working group involvement;
- Help advance research and professional practice in urban planning and enhance the visibility of the Université de Montréal through conferences, publications, and other significant academic and professional activities.
Qualifications
- Hold a Ph.D. related to urban planning, environmental design, or a related field. Candidates who have submitted their dissertation may also be considered;
- Be a member or eligible for membership in the Ordre des urbanistes du Québec or the Canadian Institute of Planners;
- Demonstrate the ability to produce high-level research;
- Demonstrate strong teaching and mentoring skills in urban planning across all academic levels;
- Have the ability and experience to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment and complement existing faculty expertise;
- Have sufficient proficiency in French or be committed to learning the language once in post, with the support of the Université de Montréal’s French language learning program, as per the University’s Language Policy.
