Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a talented and organized Venue Manager to oversee five diverse performance spaces within the Noorda Center for the Performing Arts. This role is essential to ensuring seamless technical operations, including rigging, lighting, sound, maintenance, and production coordination across a busy schedule of events and performances. The Venue Manager works closely with production staff, academic departments, touring artists, and external clients to deliver exceptional experiences for performers and audiences alike.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical assets of assigned venues, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, projection, communications equipment and stage facilities. Conduct or directly supervise all rigging and motor operation. Advise designers on the specifications and use of equipment for each event. Orient artistic staff including directors, ensemble leaders, rental clients, and volunteers to all safety and technical characteristics of facility operations. Creates and documents processes: Maintains standard UVU/The Noorda production procedures, event checklists. Work with Production Supervisor to maintain venue schedules including both production calendars and pre- and post-event work. Ensure space is prepped and ready on time for each event, and transitions smoothly to the next. Interview potential employees and hire crew, evaluate and assess crew skills and experience to best fit the needs of the EPS team. Perform periodic crew assessment/reviews. and evaluate job responsibilities based on performance.
  • Work with production departments and Technical Operations Director to schedule work calls and supervise personnel to cover all event needs. Creates and manages production schedules for events - ensuring sufficient time is allocated for all aspects of the production process, including, load in, rehearsals, performances, and strike.
  • Attend all production meetings, work calls, rehearsals, and shows as appropriate to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting the show. Coordinates with visiting event production and company management to align with UVU/SOA/The Noorda best practices.
  • Responsible for overall safety compliance and creating or updating all safety programs, training, and documentation. Maintain cleanliness and order of all workspaces. Identify and remove potential hazards. Train and supervise part time and student workers in use of all equipment with safe operation as primary focus. Develops and mentors student technicians, stage managers, designers.
  • Monitor the condition of equipment and arrange for repair/replacement within budgetary constraints; to that end conduct or facilitate maintenance on equipment. Assess supply needs and complete purchases in collaboration with the Operations Director and Shop Supervisors.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree plus three to five years of related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling at least seven years.

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in technical theater & experience in theatrical venue supervision.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of standard theatrical technical equipment and its safe operation.
  • Working knowledge of chain motors/chain hoist rigging and counterweight rigging systems.
  • Working knowledge of current theatrical building techniques. Working knowledge of standard power tools.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of the performing arts and technical production including music, theatre, dance, opera, lecture/demonstration, conferences, workshops, etc.
  • Proven knowledge with event management, from inception to post-event assessment.
  • Familiar with labor agreements and negotiation, labor law, contracts, payroll.
  • Training in crowd management and safety, first aid/CPR/AED, and industry best practices for event-related risk management practices.
  • Working knowledge of office software, including Microsoft Office, and other software/online resources used for scheduling and production management, payroll and shift scheduling software e.g. When-to-Work, etc.
  • Proven knowledge of the cultural and social needs of the community.
  • Working knowledge for an event or production organization and flow.
  • Working knowledge of safe working practices for performing arts venues and applicable PPE and safety systems.
  • General knowledge of theatrical sound and lighting systems.

Skills

  • Basic math in the areas of geometry, algebra, and calculus.
  • Theatrical and event rigging with related skills in utilizing a counterweight fly system.
  • Operation and maintenance of chain motor hoists.
  • Basic understanding and working knowledge of Vectorworks/AutoCAD, LightWright, QLab, and similar industry-standard software.
  • Troubleshooting and repair of theatrical equipment.
  • Time management and estimation.

Abilities

  • Leadership experience in one or more the following theatrical areas: Audio Engineering, Stage Electrics, Light Design, Set Design, Projection (and content management.)
  • Ability to work with employees of various skill levels from lab student to experienced technicians and artistic personnel.
  • Logical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail, including timeliness in meeting all deadlines.
  • Ability to multi-task and track projects on various timelines.
  • A passion for the performing arts and the ability to provide production and customer service excellence.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, working with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure; proactive thinker/self-starter.
  • Ability to read and interpret schedules, contracts, plots and drawings, technical riders, and other industry-specific documentation with ease.
  • Ability to hold all members, employees, and visitors accountable to unrelenting standards for safety and safe execution of all production activities.
  • Ability to quickly learn and implement new systems as required.
