Veterinary Technology Instructor

Overview

Portland Community College’s Veterinary Technology (VT) program is a regional leader in educating the next generation of Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT). We are currently looking for a faculty member who has excellent knowledge and experience, can balance academic rigor with practical application, and is passionate about teaching/training learners from diverse backgrounds.

The VT Program, located at the college’s Rock Creek campus, offers a 2-year associate’s degree that provides face-to-face didactic courses, hands-on skills labs, and clinical rotations to prepare students for the national certifying exam (VTNE) and a career as a veterinary technician. This is a full-time 1-year temporary position with excellent benefits including healthcare coverage, a pension plan, and tuition benefits. This role will be mainly at the PCC Rock Creek campus, located in Beaverton, Oregon. The position will start September 2026 and we encourage candidates without formal teaching experience to apply!

The timeline for hiring is: interviews in early to mid June.

Position Success Criteria

In addition to the minimum instructor qualifications, we are seeking candidates that meet the following success criteria. Throughout the screening process, candidates will be evaluated based on the demonstration of these criteria:

  • Demonstrated experience successfully adapting practices (in teaching, training or communicating) to include a wide range of cultural knowledge, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Brings a strong understanding of the rigors of veterinary practice and the ability to translate real-world clinical experience into meaningful, engaging learning for students.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with transparency and respect, values feedback, and demonstrates a clear commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Excellent time management skills that translate to the instructional preparation, classroom management, grading, and student support responsibilities associated with teaching multiple classes each term.
  • Experience in or willingness to learn managing compliance with regulatory bodies such as the DEA, USDA, and IACUC.
  • Has clinical expertise in small animal care, with experience in, or a willingness to develop skills in working with large animal species.

Position Minimum Qualification

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree or the equivalent in Veterinary Technology from and AVMA accredited intuition.
  • 5 years experience working in a veterinary hospital, clinic, research facility, or the equivalent; large animal experience preferable.
  • State of Oregon Certification as a licensed Veterinary Technician (CVT), or license-eligible with license acquired prior to initial teaching assignment.

How We Determine Initial Salary Placement

Initial Salary Placement will be between Step 1 ($73,911) and Step 3 ($78,408) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement. Placement at a higher step may be possible based upon additional experience and internal equity. The highest step of the range is step 17, ($118,558)
