Vice President for Information Technology & Chief Information Officer

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a globally recognized public research university and academic community, known for its innovative academic programs, groundbreaking research, and strong commitment to student success. With more than 20,900 students enrolled across 12 academic units, UAB offers a vibrant and diverse learning environment where 55 percent of the student body comes from underrepresented groups. The university manages a $5.2 billion operating budget, is in a strong financial position, and continues to expand its academic and research impact while driving economic development in Birmingham, Alabama, and beyond.

At this pivotal time, UAB seeks a strategic and visionary leader to serve as the next Chief Information Officer (CIO). Reporting directly to the President and serving on the President’s Cabinet, the CIO oversees the university’s information technology strategy and operations, ensuring that technology fully supports UAB’s academic, research, clinical, and administrative missions. The CIO will guide UAB’s transformation into a data-driven institution, championing the development of a unified data strategy, robust governance, and advanced analytics to inform planning, decision-making, and innovation across the campus and health system. The CIO will partner closely with senior leaders, faculty, staff, and health system executives to deliver secure, reliable, and forward-looking technology solutions that foster collaboration and enhance institutional performance. They will advance UAB’s IT infrastructure and cybersecurity capabilities, promote data-informed decision-making, and ensure technology investments anticipate emerging needs, including the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence.

The ideal candidate is a transformative technology leader with the vision and expertise to guide a large, complex academic and research enterprise through digital transformation. The successful candidate will bring at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience, preferably in a research-intensive university, academic medical center, or similarly complex environment. They will have a strong track record of leading enterprise-wide IT strategy and operations, expertise in data governance and emerging technologies, and proven ability to develop and lead high-performing teams. A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field is required.

UAB has retained Korn Ferry, a global organizational consulting firm, to assist with the search. The search is being led by Victoria Antolini, Ken Kring, Anna Flagg, and Lindsay Conklin. All inquiries, nominations, and expressions of interest should be submitted in confidence to Korn Ferry. Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae and a letter of interest. To ensure full consideration, inquiries, nominations, and applications should be submitted electronically, in confidence, to Anna.Flagg@Kornferry.com

UAB is an Equal Employment/Equal Educational Opportunity Institution dedicated to providing equal opportunities and equal access to all individuals regardless of race, color, religion, ethnic or national origin, sex (including pregnancy), genetic information, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and veteran’s status. As required by Title IX, UAB prohibits sex discrimination in any education program or activity that it operates. Individuals may report concerns or questions to UAB’s Assistant Vice President and Senior Title IX Coordinator. The Title IX notice of nondiscrimination is located at uab.edu/titleix

UAB also encourages applications from individuals with disabilities and veterans. A pre-employment background check is conducted on candidates selected for employment. In addition, physicians and other clinical faculty candidates who will be employed by the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (UAHSF) or other UAB Medicine entities must successfully complete a pre-employment drug and nicotine screen to be hired.
