DESCRIPTION: The Vice President, Finance, provides strategic leadership for the Minnesota Historical Society’s finance functions. This position serves as the institution’s financial leader, ensuring financial stability, rigorous policy compliance, and professional best practices to maximize effectiveness and efficiency within the Finance Department and throughout MNHS financial operations.

This position acts as a strategic business partner to senior leaders, leading the implementation and oversight of long-term plans, fostering operational agility through process re-engineering, and delivering real-time financial insights and mentorship. The position works collaboratively with executive leadership to implement and drive financial direction, policy, and strategy to broaden the reach and impact of MNHS and successfully further its mission and institutional priorities. The position also works with the Director and CEO as the primary financial liaison and counsel to the MNHS Board Executive Council’s finance, audit, and investment committees.

STATUS & HOURS: Full-time, regular (approximately 2,080 annual hours) position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field OR equivalent.
  • Ten years of accounting, financial, or economic experience of increasing responsibility.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in formulating department objectives, setting priorities, and working to advance an organization’s strategic plan.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills to mediate, collaborate, and communicate with a wide variety of people with a diverse range of knowledge and skills and diverse backgrounds, education, and interests.
  • Data Visualization and Reporting: Experience in developing and utilizing financial dashboards, rolling forecasts, or other real-time data visualization tools to support executive decision-making.
  • Financial Translation/Mentorship: Demonstrated ability to translate complex financial data and policy into actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders, increasing their "Financial IQ".
  • Systems and Process Re-engineering: Proven track record of success in optimizing financial processes, including leveraging systems initiatives to drive efficiency and operational agility.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage long- and short-term programs and financial planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a high-functioning team culture among groups of diverse, talented individuals.
  • Broad knowledge of non-profit and governmental best practices.
  • Ability to identify, interpret, and apply appropriate laws and regulations.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel.
  • Ability to work the occasional evening or weekend.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree and/or certification (e.g., MBA, JD, or CGFM).
  • Certified Public Accountant (“CPA”) certification, active or inactive license.
  • Expanded External Relations: Demonstrated experience in external financial relationship management, including partnership negotiation and working with government agencies and other key constituent groups.
  • Museum/Cultural Finance: Knowledge of finance and business practices specifically within the museum, historical, or other cultural non-profit sectors.
  • Progressive experience working in a non-profit finance department, with ample leadership and supervisory experience included.
  • Cross-sector experience in nonprofit, public sector, and/or corporate finance is a plus.
  • Knowledge of MNHS and its programs, including the MNHS charter, bylaws, mission statement, and institutional goals.
