Job Summary

Caltech’s Student Health Clinic is seeking Virtual Consulting Physicians to provide medical expertise and support to our small, dedicated health team when the Medical Director, who serves as the supervising physician, is off-site or unavailable. This fully remote position does not require night or weekend coverage. The ideal candidate will collaborate with clinic staff—including physicians, nurse practitioners, and medical assistants—to enhance student care by offering expert consultation on a variety of medical cases and clinical questions typical of an onsite college health clinic when needed by our nurse practitioner staff. This is a flexible, occasional role designed to support low-frequency consultation needs as they arise.

The clinic provides a range of acute and primary care services for enrolled students at Caltech. Onsite resources include a limited supply of oral and injectable medications, an EKG machine, and laboratory services with blood draws sent to LabCorp for processing. We also administer allergy desensitization injections under standing orders from students’ off-site allergists and assist with injectable medications as needed.

Essential Job Duties

  • Offer medical advice and recommendations for clinic providers on complex or challenging cases.
  • Assist in evaluating diagnostic results, including EKGs, laboratory and imaging reports, and advise on treatment options.
  • Provide insight and guidance on clinical protocols, ensuring adherence to best practices and current medical standards.
  • Communicate with the clinic’s Medical Director and staff, contributing expertise to support high-quality, evidence-based care.
  • Participate in case discussions and consultations as needed, providing a reliable and accessible resource for clinical decision-making.
  • Provide feedback input on clinical guidelines, protocols, and standing orders to ensure up-to-date and effective student care.
  • Provide input on educational materials and resources for health staff and students to promote health awareness and preventive care.
  • An UpToDate subscription will be provided to clinicians who provide clinical coverage at least five days per year, ensuring access to current, evidence-based medical guidance.

Basic Qualifications

  • Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Completed Residency in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
  • Licensure/Certification
    • Current, unrestricted medical license to practice in the United States.
    • Current DEA license
    • Board-certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine preferred
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years of clinical practice experience after residency with experience in college health, primary care, or urgent care settings preferred.
    • Demonstrated expertise in virtual consultation and telehealth is a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively consult and collaborate remotely.
    • Strong clinical judgment, diagnostic skills, and familiarity with a range of primary care conditions relevant to a college population.
    • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and secure communication tools.

Working Conditions

  • Fully remote, available Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Pacific Time).
  • No night or weekend call requirements.
  • Flexible consultation schedule to accommodate Caltech’s Student Health Clinic team’s needs within the designated hours.
  • Successful application for malpractice with Caltech’s provider.
  • Completion of Caltech’s annual compliance modules.

Required Documents

  • Resume.

Compensation:

Anticipated $400 per 8-hour on-call shift for flexible, low-frequency virtual consultation coverage.

Hiring Range

$50/hr

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
