Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy (Three-Year Appointment)

Franklin College invites applications for a full-time, three-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy position, with the possibility of renewal, beginning in August 2026. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to and help develop a vibrant philosophy program at a small, student-centered liberal arts college. The ideal candidate is a generalist who is passionate about teaching philosophy to students with little prior background in the discipline. Applicants should be actively committed to supporting student development both inside and outside the classroom and to contributing more broadly to the college’s liberal arts curriculum.

About Franklin College: Located approximately 20 miles from downtown Indianapolis, Franklin College provides a strong liberal arts education through small class sizes and intentional faculty-student mentoring. The College emphasizes experiential learning and practical academic opportunities that support personal, intellectual, and professional growth. Franklin College is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse campus community where all individuals feel valued, respected, and supported.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teach courses in Introduction to Philosophy, Logic, Ethics, and Philosophy of Language, with additional teaching in the history of philosophy, philosophy and popular culture, or contemporary philosophical trends highly desirable. Engage undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds and learning needs, fostering critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. Participate in student mentoring, academic advising, and college committee work. Contribute to the development of the liberal arts curriculum and support Franklin College’s commitment to small class sizes and intentional student-faculty relationships.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or ABD status in Philosophy or a closely related field. Dedication to working with students in a scaffolded undergraduate research curriculum within a collegial liberal arts environment. Commitment to student development both inside and outside the classroom. Demonstrated ability to employ pedagogical techniques centered on engaged learning.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of college teaching experience. Demonstrated ability to connect philosophical concepts with popular culture to enhance undergraduate learning.

Application Instructions: Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until November 14, 2025. Applicants should submit a complete application, including a letter of interest, CV, contact information for three references, teaching evaluations, and a statement of teaching via the application link: Franklin College Faculty Application.
