Job Description
The Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor - Piano, to begin Fall 2026. This is a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track appointment. The successful candidate will be an accomplished artist who is dedicated to teaching applied piano and related courses. We seek an individual whose work exhibits vitality, ingenuity, and leadership.
A terminal degree (Doctorate or ABD) is required. The chosen candidate will be expected to serve on various university, college, and school committees, establish ongoing professional activity as a performer and participate actively in student recruitment, as well as other related duties as assigned by the Director of the School of Music.
The school is particularly interested in candidates who have communication abilities and cross-cultural competencies to maximize their effectiveness with many different groups of students, colleagues, and community members.
This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU, Local 200United.
Qualifications
- Doctorate in piano.
- Significant experience in studio teaching.
- Significant performance experience as a solo and collaborative pianist.
Job Specific Qualifications
- Experience performing and teaching across genres and styles of music.
- Ability to utilize and implement new pedagogies and classroom strategies to advance comprehensive learning opportunities with a commitment to 21st-Century piano pedagogy.
- Artist-scholar with a developing national profile, with promise toward an international profile.
- Demonstrated success in recruiting
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills that contribute to a respectful work environment.
- Ability to develop strategies in defining and supporting the future direction of the piano program and the School of Music.
- Organizational and leadership abilities.
- Commitment to working collegially.
Responsibilities
- Teach applied piano lessons to graduate and undergraduate students.
- Teach piano skills and piano literature classes.
- Other teaching within candidate’s area of expertise as assigned by the Director.
- Maintain active expertise in the field of piano performance and pedagogy.
- Serve on committees in the School, College, and University.
- Recruitment, program development, community outreach.
