Job Summary:

The Visiting Faculty Member in Mental Health Counseling (open rank, depending on experience) will support graduate programs in Counseling through high-quality teaching, student mentoring, and active participation in departmental initiatives. This full-time visiting faculty role—appointed at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level based on qualifications and experience—focuses on preparing students to meet licensure and certification requirements in New York State.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student-centered education, clinical training, and advancing inclusion, access, and equity in counseling practice. This position is funded through New York State’s Career Pathway Training Initiative (CPT) and may be renewed annually through August 30, 2027.

In addition to teaching, academic advising and mentoring, the faculty member will serve as the liaison to the CPT team, providing regular updates on student progress, promoting CPT-sponsored programming, and helping ensure students are aware of resources and opportunities that support academic and career success.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Teach 21 credits per academic year in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, with an emphasis on clinical skill-based courses such as counseling techniques, practicum, internship, and other CACREP-aligned core content areas
  • Serve as the primary academic advisor and mentor to students supported through the Career Pathway Training (CPT) initiative, offering individualized guidance on academic progress, licensure preparation, and career development
  • Contribute to curriculum design, assessment, and continuous program improvement efforts in alignment with CACREP standards and licensure requirements
  • Collaborate closely with the CPT initiative team to enhance student engagement, retention, and success, including participation in CPT-related events, workshops, or tracking activities
  • Participate actively in departmental meetings, faculty development, committee service, and other responsibilities that support the mission and operations of the Counseling programs and School of Social and Behavioral Sciences

Every effort has been made to identify the essential functions of this position. It in no way states or implies that the responsibilities listed are the only duties required to perform in this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position responsibilities if the work is similar, related, or is an essential function of the position.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • A Ph.D. in Counselor Education from a CACREP-accredited program is required. ABD candidates will be considered if they are nearing completion, with degree conferral expected by or shortly after the start date
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Mental Health Counselor (LMHC or equivalent) in New York State
  • Proven experience in teaching clinical skills courses and supervising practicum and internship students at the graduate level.
  • Relevant clinical experience in mental health settings, with the capability to incorporate practice-based insights into teaching and advising
  • A strong commitment to multicultural competence, ethical practice, and inclusive pedagogy in counselor education

Education Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Counselor Education from a CACREP-accredited program is required
  • ABD candidates will be considered if they complete their degree by the start date or soon after
