SUMMARY

The Department of English and Creative Writing at Stephen F. Austin State University, a member of The University of Texas System, is accepting applications for up to eight visiting lecturers in first-year writing for the 2026-2027 academic year. The successful candidates will have experience in teaching, assessing, and supporting first-year writing students. The primary responsibilities of this position are teaching first-year writing courses and engaging in team-based departmental professional development activities. This position is not tenure-track; the contract duration is from August 15, 2026 to May 31, 2027. There is an option to renew based on satisfactory performance. The workload entails a 4-4 teaching load plus service responsibilities. Summer teaching opportunities are available.

Candidates must have at minimum a M.A. in English or a related field with at least 18 graduate hours in English by the time of employment. Experience in teaching first-year writing, 10th-12th grade writing, developmental reading or writing, and/or co-requisite models is desirable. The ideal candidates will demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development, particularly in the innovative use of technology to enhance the teaching of reading and writing. Expertise in reading pedagogy is desirable.

We seek motivated and creative instructors to support our growing first-year program. This is a good opportunity to gain experience in a collegial department working with a forward-thinking team of rhetoric and composition experts within a state-of-the-art first-year writing program.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a full-time, nine-month or semester faculty appointment depending on the circumstances. Responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the chair.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in the field in which the individual will be teaching is required.

Practical experience sufficient to teach at a university level, through teaching or profession, is required. Experience teaching at a university level is preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs an equivalent of thirty teaching load credits (TLC) for the combined fall and spring semesters; reduction of teaching load through reassignment of duties is possible under certain circumstances.
  2. May conduct supplemental instructional activities such as independent studies, internships, and advising.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Provides services to the university and the profession and engages in research/scholarly/creative activities.
  2. May supervise the work of student assistants.
  3. May serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
  4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge and practical experience in the field in which the individual will be teaching.
  2. Ability to effectively teach undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  3. Ability to work within a collaborative faculty environment.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  5. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.
