The Institute of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Kiel University, within the context of the Excellence Cluster 'ROOTS – Social, Environmental, and Cultural Connectivity in Past Societies', invites applications for a
W 2-Professorship in prehistoric and protohistoric archaeology with a focus on archaeological theory and methods
to start at the earliest possible date.
The future job holder shall be responsible for the fields of prehistoric and protohistoric archaeology – with a focus on archaeological theory and methods – in research and teaching. The main focus of the professorship lies in the subject areas of archaeological theory and methods and their relevance to interdisciplinary research processes regarding the past. The duties of the professorship include participation in teaching within the existing degree programs in prehistoric and historical archaeology and to further the development of archaeological theory and methods through research.
The future job holder will implement the integration of insights from theory, archaeology, the natural sciences and the life sciences through interdisciplinary collaboration. The professor's profile includes the integration of multiple approaches to the analysis of past societies. The duties of the professorship also include active participation in the Cluster of Excellence ROOTS, the Research Building ARCWorlds, and the willingness to contribute to the priority research area Societal, Environmental and Cultural Change (SECC) of Kiel University. Non-German-speaking applicants are advised that they are required to conduct courses in German after a period of three years at the latest.
Requirements for appointment:
- a completed university degree in archaeology, prehistoric and protohistoric archaeology, or a comparable field of study,
- a PhD in a relevant subject area,
- additional academic achievements, demonstrated in the framework of a junior professorship, or a habilitation, or equivalent scientific accomplishments in the subject area of the professorship,
- internationally recognised publications in the field of theoretical archaeology and the theoretical foundations of archaeological methodology, including
- scholarly work on various archaeological theoretical approaches, on the critical examination of cultural, life and natural science approaches within archaeology and on a reflective perspective regarding the social and cultural situatedness of research taking global perspectives into account,
- sound knowledge of diverse archaeological research questions and associated data as well as the varied materialities of archaeology,
- attested experience in applying for third-party funding,
- attested evidence of teaching experience in the field of archaeological theory and methods,
- willingness to participate in the priority research area Societal, Environmental and Cultural Change (SECC).
Desired qualifications include:
- attested experience of working in interdisciplinary collaborative projects,
- attested experience in the conception and organization of academic conferences.
