W3 Professorship for General Linguistics

Professorship for General Linguistics

The Faculty of Languages, Literature, and Cultures invites applications for a

Professorship for General Linguistics

as a professorship for life at grade W 3 to be appointed as soon as possible.

The future position holder (f/m/d) is expected to represent the subject of general linguistics in research and teaching in its breadth, covering different languages and various linguistic subfields. An innovative approach is expected that combines modern empirical methods (particularly quantitative ones) with theoretical modelling of language as a complex adaptive system.

The professorship is an integral part of the Department of Linguistics and Multilingualism (DeLM) currently being established and is intended to play a key role in shaping the theoretical and empirical orientation of linguistics in Regensburg, as well as actively contributing to planned collaborative research projects and the interdisciplinary focus of the university. Experience in the competitive acquisition of third-party funding, involvement in international research networks and participation in academic self-governance are required.

The professorship carries a teaching load of 9 weekly hours per semester, primarily delivered in the BA and MA programmes “General and Comparative Linguistics”, in the MA programme “Multilingualism and Regionality” and “Digital Humanities” as well as in the freely combinable minor subject (FKN) “Language and Communication”. It is also involved in the supervision and further development of relevant degree programmes as well as in interdisciplinary cooperation. Research-oriented teaching, innovative teaching concepts and the supervision of students and early-career researchers are an integral part of the tasks. A willingness to cooperate in interdisciplinary programmes is also expected.

Prerequisites for taking up the position are, in addition to the general conditions from public sector employment law: a completed university degree, pedagogic suitability, and particular aptitude for academic work, generally shown by a doctoral degree, as well as additional academic achievements, such as a Habilitation or an equivalent research record. Scientific research experience gained outside of a university environment, or while employed as a Junior Professor, will also be taken into consideration and may be considered equivalent to a formal academic qualification.

The University of Regensburg is particularly committed to reconciling family and working life (for more information, see https://www.uni-regensburg.de/universitaet/jobs-und-karriere/familien-service). To fulfill the equality directive and increase the number of female professors, we explicitly encourage applications from qualified women.

In case of essentially similar suitability, applicants with severe disabilities will be preferentially selected.

The prerequisites for appointment under civil servant law are based on the provisions of the Bavarian Public Service Code (BayBG) and the Bavarian University Staff Act (BayHIG).

Applications containing the normal documents (resume that does not have to include a picture, certificates, list of publications with up to five publications) should be submitted, exclusively electronically (pdf-format, one file)
