W3 Professorship for Human Genetics

Responsibilities include adequately representing the discipline in research, teaching, and patient care. Furthermore, the professorship is linked to the management of the Human Genetics Institute at the University Hospital Erlangen. The independent Stem Cell Biology Department is affiliated to the institute.

We are seeking a person with extensive experience, several years of leadership experience in both clinical and scientific areas, and expertise in human resources and business management. Close cooperation with the institutes and clinics of the University Hospital Erlangen is expected, both scientifically and clinically. The institute participates in patient care within the university outpatient clinic and operates the faculty's Next-Generation Sequencing Core Unit. The University Hospital Erlangen is a recognized service provider for oncological and rare diseases in the Genome Sequencing Model Project according to Section 64e of the German Social Code (SGB V) .

The academic focus should strengthen at least one of the faculty's existing scientific focuses in the field of hereditary diseases. Collaboration in the Center for Rare Diseases Erlangen (ZSEER) and the Center for Personalized Medicine (ZPM) is required. Participation in the Faculty of Medicine's research networks (Collaborative Research Centers, Graduate Schools, Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research) is expected, as is involvement in student teaching. The Faculty of Medicine offers degree programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Molecular Medicine (B.Sc.; M.Sc.), Medical Process Management, Midwifery, and Speech Therapy, as well as cross-faculty programs in Medical Engineering and Integrated Immunology.

Requirements for employment include a completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude, a special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate, and additional scientific achievements. The latter is demonstrated by a habilitation or equivalent scientific achievements, which can also be achieved in a position outside of academia or within the framework of a W1 professorship. In addition, proof of recognition as a doctor of human genetics (m/f/d) is required.

FAU has the right to appoint professors. The civil service requirements for appointment are governed by the provisions of the Bavarian Civil Service Act (BayBG) and the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (BayHIG). The age limit stipulated in Article 60, Paragraph 3 of the BayHIG must be observed. It is intended to contractually regulate the duties of the chief physician of the clinical facility associated with the professorship, including the associated right of liquidation. However, a private-law employment relationship is generally required for the performance of the professorship's duties. This can be waived if the right to liquidation already existed due to a chief physician's management function in a civil service position for life (C4/W3).

FAU expects participation in academic self-government, commitment to acquiring external funding, and a strong presence at the university to provide intensive student support. A willingness to teach in English is desirable.

FAU pursues an equal opportunity policy and excludes any form of discrimination. Applications from individuals with severe disabilities and those with equivalent status will be given priority, provided they otherwise have essentially the same qualifications, abilities, and professional performance. Applications from female researchers are expressly welcomed. FAU is a member of the association "Familie in der Hochschule eV" (Family at the University) and offers support for dual-career couples.

Applications should be submitted online at https://berufungen.fau.de by October 26, 2025 , and addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. The Dean is available for questions and further information at med-dekanat@fau.de
