About the Project
We have been creating a 'closed loop' neuromodulation platform for a number of years. The aim is to record brain activity using a wearable device, and to use the collected signal to direct brain stimulation in order to make the neuromodulation more targeted. There are many applications such such technology, such as in chronic pain management. To date, we have focused on time domain features in the electroencephalogram (EEG) as the signal used to guide the neuromodulation.
We now aim to make the next generation of this neuromodulation platform. There are avenues in all different parts of the system, for example improving the hardware present or the real-time artifact removal. We particularly aim for incorporating more control theory based approaches for closing the loop between the brain signal recording and the brain stimulation. The approach(es) employed must be capable of operating in real-time, on low power hardware typically found in a wearable device.
The project will particularly suit a student with an interest in control theory, who is also interested in the practical application and deployment of their approaches. For example, we aim to collect EEG signals (in addition to using pre-recorded ones), and to explore the deployment of control algorithms onto low power hardware.
This project is expected to start in September 2027.

Eligibility: The standard academic entry requirement for this PhD is an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree (or international equivalent) in Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related subject OR any upper-second class (2:1) honours degree and a Master's degree at merit (or international equivalent) in Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related subject.

Funding Notes
Funding for this project covers tuition fees, UKRI minimum annual stipend (currently £21,805/annum) and up to a £2.5k/annum research training support grant for the full duration of the 3.5-year programme.
