Welding Instructor
Job Summary
Full-time members of the faculty are professional educators who have the primary responsibility of instruction and management of assigned classes. Additional responsibilities include fulfilling the Metropolitan Community College mission, vision, values, strategic plan, Board of Trustees’ charges and educational philosophy, and primary goal of providing a quality education for all students attending the college.
Final compensation offer will be determined, based on various factors, such as academic credentials, relevant work and instructional experience
Essential Functions
- Courses will include Welding Layout & Fabrication, Industrial Rigging, Welding I, Welding II, TIG Welding, MIG Welding, Flux Core Arc Welding, Thermal Cutting Processes, Print Reading & Weld Symbols, Welding Industry Fundamentals
- Maintain knowledge of OSHA regulations regarding Welding
- Advise students in this field for assessment, credentials and transfer to a four-year university
- Develop, assess and revise Welding curriculum for diverse learners
- Deliver effective instruction – Provide quality instruction, which is reflective of current discipline standards and is accurate, relevant, and engaging using college approved curriculum and resources
- Assess student learning – Demonstrate reflective practice, including assessment of student learning. This includes ongoing formative assessments, as well as official departmental assessments
- Manage classes and learning environments – Foster a positive classroom-learning environment by presenting information in a way that is inclusive to all learners, including the assurance of section 508 accessibility
- Promote continual improvement as part of the cycle of teaching and learning.
- Support learning through student engagement – Incorporate pedagogical strategies such as active learning, authentic and problem-based activities, and other successful teaching strategies into classroom instruction
- Provide student guidance – Help students develop academic habits for college success
- Pursue professional development – Stay current in academic field
- Actively participate collegially in department, campus, cross-college, discipline specific, district, and community service activities
- Perform other duties assigned to provide high-quality learning experience for students, including participating in commencement, attending college functions, etc.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Physical Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Five (5) years of experience in an occupational function that has a direct relationship to weldments fabricated to a code or standard in other production, construction, inspection or repair
AND
- Associate's degree in a qualifying field that provides a foundation in the subject matter* being taught:
- Welding
- Welding Technology
- Welding Engineering
- Welding Engineering Technology
OR
- Formal training such as apprenticeship that provides a foundation in the subject matter being taught
OR
- Journeyman card in a similar field of study (i.e., Boilermaker)
*Alternative Qualifications and/or Qualifications for Specified Types of Courses:
- At least ten (10) years or more of welding industry experience in production, construction, inspection, or repair may qualify an instructor to teach introductory welding courses (WELD 100, 105, 110, 130, 140/141, 150/151, 160/161, 230/231) without formal education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to teach Welding Layout & Fabrication, Industrial Rigging, Welding I, Welding II, TIG Welding, MIG Welding, Flux Core Arc Welding, Thermal Cutting Processes, Print Reading & Weld Symbols, Welding Industry Fundamentals.
- Blueprint reading, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SMAW, Oxy fuel, plasma
- Fabrication, pipe fitting, pipe welding, IG-4G welding, oxy fuel torch cutting, field welding.
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
- Experience working in the industry
- Curriculum development with welding content
- Familiar with AWS and AP1104 code books
- Two (2) years of teaching experience as lead instructor
- Teaching experience in a community college and demonstrated interest in and passion for teaching community college students
- Familiarity with federal/state safety regulations that impact welding laboratories.
- Familiarity and willingness to employ current pedagogical, instructional, and assessment methods in teaching college students
- Demonstrated experience with utilizing a variety of classroom technologies, both inside and outside the classroom
- Experience working with students from a diverse background
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with all constituencies of a diverse community
- Ability to work well with others
- Strong oral and written communication skills
Physical Requirements
Positions in this class typically requires feeling, grasping, hearing, keyboarding, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly.
