The Wellbeing Coordinator will play a central role in contributing to a supportive and inclusive culture of wellbeing at RCL enhancing students' mental health and promoting inclusivity throughout their academic journey.

Based in the Wellbeing & Disability Team, the Wellbeing Coordinator will provide a range of support to students with diverse needs, including those with disabilities, mobility challenges, mental health concerns, neurodivergence, and those facing personal or academic difficulties. The role involves offering tailored, person-centred support, making appropriate referrals, and working collaboratively to ensure the implementation of reasonable adjustments in line with RCL’s policies and external regulations. The role will also include responsibilities related to safeguarding, addressing issues such as sexual harassment, and ensuring that all students, regardless of their background or circumstances, have equal opportunities to thrive in their academic and personal development.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide tailored one-to-one wellbeing sessions for students, addressing their individual needs.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for students seeking mental health support, including referrals to external professionals where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with academic staff to implement reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities or mental health conditions.
  • Develop and deliver high-quality workshops, webinars, and training sessions on mental health and wellbeing for students and staff.
  • Develop and create informative resources and materials for both students and staff, focusing on mental health and wellbeing, to raise awareness, provide guidance, and promote a supportive environment.
  • Conduct initial assessments and risk evaluations for students in crisis, ensuring timely interventions.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of wellbeing initiatives, using data to measure impact and identify areas for improvement.
  • Liaise with external organisations, mental health professionals, and local healthcare providers to enhance support services.
  • Ensure safeguarding policies are fully integrated into wellbeing activities and act as a Safeguarding officer with appropriate training.
  • Provide guidance on Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) applications and assist with diagnostic assessments.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure compliance with the Equality Act 2010 and institutional policies.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of all interactions in line with GDPR and data protection policies.
  • Contribute to processes related to mitigating circumstances, fitness to study, attendance, and special examination arrangements.
  • Support staff development by offering advice and training on wellbeing, mental health and inclusivity.
  • Contribute to an inclusive environment by reducing barriers to learning and teaching for students with diverse needs.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Comprehensive knowledge of mental health issues, suicide prevention, and safeguarding practices, including the ability to respond to sensitive and potentially life-threatening situations.
  • Familiarity with higher education policies and practices related to student wellbeing.
  • Demonstrated experience providing mental health support, ideally in an educational setting.
  • Proven ability to manage crises, conduct risk assessments, and create recovery-focused plans, particularly in relation to mental health and suicide prevention.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a range of stakeholders, including students, academic staff, and external agencies.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends across campuses: Holborn, Fitzrovia, Wembley, Kingsbury, and Southall.

Desirable

  • Accreditation with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCPC) or the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
  • Recognised professional certification in mental health counselling or psychotherapy.
  • Knowledge of the Office for Students (OfS) regulatory framework and its relevance to student support.
