"Senior Research Fellow, Technology and Society"

Full-time, Ongoing position

Salary: $147,138 – $169,011 per annum, plus 17% Super and Leave Loading.

Lead impactful interdisciplinary research at the intersection of society, culture and technology.

The Opportunity

The Institute for Culture and Society is recognised for research that engages directly with contemporary global change. We’re seeking a Senior Research Fellow, Technology and Society who will contribute to a world-leading inquiry exploring how technologies shape, and are shaped by, social, political and cultural forces. You will play a central role in advancing research agendas that respond to major societal challenges.

You will conduct independent, original research aligned to one or more Institute Research Program areas, including Automated Worlds, Borders and Migration, Environment and Technology, Queer Cultures, and Urban Futures. Your work will produce high-quality publications, inform public debate, and strengthen the Institute’s research impact. You will drive strategic grant activity, contribute to supervision of higher degree researchers, and cultivate collaborations across academic, industry, government and community partners.

This role supports institution-building through leadership in research projects, sector partnerships, and engagement across the humanities and social sciences. You will also contribute to teaching, curriculum development, and activities that integrate research into learning programs and public-facing initiatives.

What Success Looks Like:

• Produce original, high-quality research outputs, including publications and non-traditional research outputs.
• Secure competitive research funding and lead major research projects with strong governance and financial management.
• Successfully supervise and mentor postgraduate researchers, supporting timely completion and publication outcomes.
• Build collaborations across partners, communities and sectors to extend the reach and impact of ICS research.
• Contribute to teaching, curriculum development and development of short courses where required.

About You

• You have completed a PhD in a relevant field such as anthropology, sociology, media studies, STS, digital humanities, or related disciplines.
• You bring a strong interdisciplinary research profile demonstrating leadership across two or more areas aligned to the ICS Research Programs.
• You have experience in industry, policy or community‑engaged research, including securing significant research funding.
• You have demonstrated experience supervising higher degree researchers and contributing to teaching and curriculum development.
• You work collaboratively with colleagues, external partners and diverse communities.
