About the Project

Project Overview:

Many behaviours differ between the sexes and this is often controlled by hormones. In our laboratory, we explore how hormones regulate behaviours that differ between the sexes. Though these hormones are typically made by the gonads and adrenals, we are especially interested if they are made in the brain and if this is important for social behaviour and to healthy aging. Hence, this project is designed to understand how locally brain-produced steroid hormones are relevant for neuronal health and behaviour, using mice as a model. We will investigate the regulation of neurosteroid synthesis in the brain by both internal and external chemicals. Using brain slices, animals and cell lines, we will also explore the signalling by these locally produced estrogens in the brain, including signalling via well-characterized intracellular nuclear receptors and novel membrane receptors. Depending on the interest of the student, this project can be focused on molecular signalling by hormones and/or behavioural analyses or on stress and aging. If successful, this project will highlight the role of locally produced steroids and uniquely show evidence that they may signal as neurotransmitters in the mammalian brain. In addition, this can help us understand side-effects of aromatase inhibitors that are used in cancer therapy to decrease oestrogen levels in the body and for neuroprotection against neurodegeneration.

The student will be part of a vibrant neuroendocrine group with an opportunity to network with overseas collaborators. Dr Vasudevan supervises or co-supervises 8 students in interdisciplinary projects ranging from oscillations in biology, autism and regulation of behaviour. The student will learn several experimental techniques including immunoassays, molecular biological techniques, slice culture, cell culture, manipulation of genetically modified mouse models, cell biology assays and behavioural analysis. For students interested in mentoring, there are opportunities to serve as co-advisors in summer or autumn undergraduate projects.

Eligibility:

• Applicants should have a good bachelor’s degree (minimum of a UK Upper Second (2:1) or equivalent)/master’s degree in Biology or a strongly-related discipline. Molecular Biological or behavioural experience in any system a plus, but not necessary.
