Women's political engagement in Francophone West Africa (1945-60)
About the Project
The School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities is looking to recruit a fully-funded PhD candidate to work on women’s political engagement in West Africa from the end of the Second World War through decolonisation. This PhD is part of Dr. Sarah Frank’s UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship: ‘Rebuilding lives, redefining belonging: ex-soldiers, their families and communities in post-war Africa, 1945-60’.
The successful candidate will specialise in the political engagement stream of Francophone West Africa. Within the broad stream of Women’s political engagement in West Africa between 1945-1960, the candidate is encouraged to find their own dissertation topic under the theme of women’s political engagement in Francophone West Africa. This can focus solely on Senegal or AOF as a whole. The PhD will require archival research in Senegal, France, and the UK. You will also have the opportunity to develop expertise in digital humanities methodologies and in oral histories.
The successful candidate must be fluent in French; knowledge of Wolof, Serere, or Pulaar would be very welcome.
