Womens Health Equity Fellowship (Visiting Instructor)

The University of Utah Women's Health Equity Fellowship (WHE) is an OBGYN departmental fellowship, which aims to address health equity for women in low resource settings. Core competencies in clinical care, research, professionalism and leadership, as well as global health ethics, partnerships and cultural competencies, will provide trainees with a well-rounded and enriching professional and educational experience.

The WHE Fellow will spend their first year primarily working at Tsehootsooi Medical Center in Fort Defiance, Arizona, serving the peoples of the Navajo Nation. This will follow a short time spent in Salt Lake City, where the fellow has the option to complete a Master of Science in Clinical Innovation. While on-site, the Fellow will learn from their site mentors and hone their clinical skills.

In their second year, trainees will primarily live and train in Kigali, Rwanda with University partners at the University of Rwanda, Kigali (CHUK). The Fellow will also spend several months in Utah, allowing them to receive mentorship and work toward completion of their chosen research project, wherein they will re-apply their clinical knowledge and develop competencies in clinical innovation and quality improvement. During that time in Salt Lake City, the fellow will also function as a general ob/gyn, supervising medical students and residents on labor and delivery and the gynecology inpatient service.

We are seeking passionate individuals who are drawn to serving local, rural and global communities in low resource settings. One position is available for the Women's Health Equity Fellowship on a competitive basis, for the July 2025 start date.

Eligible applicants must have completed an accredited Obstetrics and Gynecology residency and be licensed to practice medicine in their current home state. They must be Board eligible or Board certified in general obstetrics and gynecology, and capable of serving as a generalist Ob-Gyn attending physician (e.g., a candidate with a long hiatus from providing obstetric care or laparoscopic surgical care would not have adequate skills). Completion of the General Obstetrics and Gynecology ABOG written board exam prior to beginning fellowship is expected except under extenuating circumstances.

Application Requirements:

  • CV/Resume (Please include all past experience with global and rural health)
  • CREOG Score Report
  • Personal Statement (limit to 1.5 pages)
  • Statement detailing applicant's personal philosophy on health equity and rural health (limit 1 page)
  • Letters of Recommendation, to be sent separately by author to whefellowship@hsc.utah.edu
    • If you are a graduating resident, please send one letter from your Program Director and 2 other faculty members.
    • If you are an attending physician, please send one letter from your current supervising physician and 2 other colleagues who know you well.
  • International medical graduates must be ECFMG Certified and ABOG eligible. All international (non U.S. residents) must submit copies of the following requirements in addition to those listed above:
    • Valid ECFGM certificate with clinical skills assessment certification
  • Please submit all materials in one PDF document in the order listed above. Send complete application or any questions to whefellowship@hsc.utah.edu. Upon receipt of the listed application materials, a pdf form will be sent to the applicant to be completed within one week of receiving. Applications will not be considered complete, without this form.
