Introduction

We are looking for enthusiastic, communicative public administrators with an affinity for sociology, and enthusiastic, communicative sociologists with an affinity for public administration, with a demonstrable interest in teaching the bachelor's programs in sociology and public administration, starting in mid-August.

Job description

A varied job in a young, diverse and enthusiastic team with good employment conditions, in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement Dutch Universities (CAO NU). The employment contract is initially entered into for a period of 1 year. There is then a possibility to extend the agreement by one year, and then once more by one year. The trial period is two months.

As a tutor, you will supervise first-year and second-year (bachelor) education groups (public administration, sociology and possibly also for the international bachelor Management of International and Social Challenges). You observe and analyse the group process and, where necessary, adjust it by means of questions and examples, not by directly providing information. You see it as a challenge to bring students to a deeper understanding of the subject matter and to stimulate their academic thinking level. You enjoy and consider it a challenge to supervise groups of students. Being able to enthuse, motivate and inspire are important elements of the position. The success of the training programme partly depends on your commitment!

The scope of the appointment can vary from 0.5 - 0.8 FTE. You will (depending on the scope of the appointment) usually supervise two groups per day, which meet twice a week at fixed times. After each block of 9 weeks, other subjects start and the composition of the groups changes. You will also act as a skills trainer during practicals.

The work as a tutor/trainer follows the students' schedule exactly, so leave is only possible during the non-teaching periods. This means that you are expected to be flexible. During teaching weeks, you must be present for three to four working days to provide education and attend meetings such as subject consultations, intervisions and training courses. Additional work such as preparing education, checking reports and tests, and the associated administrative tasks (e.g. attendance and grade registration) are not location-specific, but often require a lot of time, which means that work must be carried out 4 days a week in almost every period.

Job requirements

  • A university master's degree in Public Administration or Sociology completed before September 2025;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, both in Dutch and English (demonstrable);
  • Some experience with guiding groups is an advantage;
  • An affinity with statistics and methods & techniques is an advantage (please mention this in your letter);
  • Full availability during the teaching weeks;
  • In preparation for teaching (teaching starts on September 1, 2025), you will participate in a mandatory introductory day and a tutor training (in the week of August 25, 2025).

Working conditions

We offer you an internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with excellent employment conditions in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

The starting date of the position is August 18, 2025. The salary depends on your knowledge and experience and amounts to a full-time position (38 hours) between € 3,378 and € 5,331 gross per month, scale 10, in accordance with the CAO-NU. Your location is Campus Woudestein - Rotterdam, at Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB). The position has a size of 0.5 FTE - 0.8 FTE. The contract is entered into for a period of 1 year and can be extended by another year (up to a maximum of 3 contracts of 1 year) if you prove to be suitable and continue in the same position, under the same (financial and/or organizational) circumstances.
